my first black hole

I have discovered my first black hole in the Maia system in the Pleiades nebula.

I know that you can't "see" a black hole as you can other things.... but I was very surprised to see LITERALLY nothing there.
Since I am flying through a nebulae .. .of red and green glowing dust ... I expected that I would see some kind of swirlying mass of matter flying in towards the black hole or something. Or at least see an obvious space of nothingness.... but I can't even tell there is anything there at all. The nebula glows all around, there is no sign of even a blank space. Or do I need to actually drop out of supercruise into regular space the way I would for an asteroid belt or something like that? How close can I get to a black hole without taking damage or being destroyed? I am currently sitting about 1 LS away....

Thanks!

Here's my first encounter with a black hole, maybe it'll help. http://www.noahjdchinnbooks.com/2015/02/12/behold-black-hole/

Not on the slide show the distances it took for me to get that distortion effect.

I haven't actually logged in since the latest patch, so it may be a graphical glitch.

But I can tell you this much; I was in Maia a couple of weeks ago, and the gravitational lensing was visible. But Maia isn't particularly big, so you have to get fairly close.

Also, the nebula cloud is so diffuse, so vague, you won't actually see any "swirling". But you will see the stars shifting quite dramatically; you'll see the lensing creating a bubble effect, with the star field moving in the opposite direction.

And no, you don't have to drop out of SC. In fact, it's better if you don't; the lensing effect is most visible when you're moving fast enough to see relative movement.

wow that video is really cool. In the end I really didn't see anything with my black hole... it was very disappointing. I approached it *very* slowly to see how close I could get... I got pretty close and finally turned around when my heat reached about 120%. I never did see that lensing effect... maybe when I find a bigger black hole. I do hope that the "unnerf" this effect with black holes... that should be one of the more awesome experiences when you're exploring!!

Found my first black hole yesterday, can just see some light lensing if you look hard, more visible in game as you move, but very meh.

Yeah they messed with black holes in the last patch. MAIA wasn't actually that great when I visited a few months back. Mintaka however is/was very impressive

The only black hole that remains as grand as ever is Sagittarius A, the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy.
Here's a screenshot:

Wow that video shared! Never knew black holes were so much more impressive before!!

I have seen a couple in the latest build and they are practically non-existent. I could see no distortion at all, or any impression of a black hole at all even at 0.5ls away.

Guess will have to wait till its reverted back to the old state or enhanced again.

Is that after the patch? All the 5 to 10 solar masses i discovered after the patch don't have much distortion... I wish i had seen my first before the patch. It must have been shocking... the first one i discovered was by accident and i thought that something was wrong when i didn't see anything in my view and i started burning.

Yeah, its like this after the patch. I took this screenshot yesterday. The other black holes are nowhere near this impressive.

I wish I could have earned the money for my exploration ship and got out here before the patch then.... that's really disappointing. Why would they change something like this that has no impact on anything other than exciting visuals for explorers?
