Were you able to get a detailed surface scan from that distance?
I had a scary experience at a Black Hole once....
The scariest moment I've had with Black Holes happened at the Great Annihilator... I had gone close up with the Annihilator B, and as I turned around and went to supercruise, and accelerated out of the "sphere of messed-up-ness" that surrounds a black hole, it was like all the galaxy around came rushing ain at me to smash me to subatomic smithereens!.. then the universe snapped back into place around me. It made me jump off my chair.
You can get this effect from any black hole, but the ones smaller than like 20 solar masses doesn't make a very impressive "snap", and Annihilator A and Sgr A* made the effect so drawn out that it more felt like being displaced...
