My first conflict zone

So last night I was sitting in Fu City (Ross 210) checking the bulletin board for missions and decided to take a departure from my normal bounty hunting with my mostly A rated viper and accept a mission to take out 7 targets at a war zone. 15K credits ---- not much but I wanted to find out what it was all about. I head out to NLTT 49528, and check out my nav screen on arrival and sure enough there some conflict zones. I pick a low intensity zone and head there. About half way there I am interdicted, not sure why as I am clean and have no cargo and I'm in a viper. I submit and bring up hard points, and wait to find out what this is all about. it is an npc and I get a message that I'm not wanted in these parts or something like that and get fired on. He is wanted, so I happily collect a bounty voucher and check my transaction screen -- still have 7 targets. I then proceed to the conflict zone and drop in. Whoa, ---all I see are federal ships shooting at each other --- where are my targets. Then I rember I am supposed to pick a side, so I check out the contact tab and see there 2 factions liberals and pirates, I don't like liberals or pirates, but I like pirates less, so they are now my enemy. I notice that there are mostly larger ships, asps, federal drop ships, etc. So, I pick out a dropship and take him on. I notice right away these are not the normal npc's they are buffed and can take, and give, a lot more punishment, they are also not wanted and as such have no bounty, but on the other hand I am not wanted either for having murdered a dropship. OK one down, six to go ---I pick my next target ---there is a lot of red here. An ASP nice target, suddenly, I start taking fire ---I forgot there is a sea of red here and I am their enemy. I also forgot to watch my shields and, bang, my shields go down and before I can react I am at 51% hull. I boost away to let my shields heal, and considered dropping the mission, but then thought, I took the mission -- its all or nothing, so back in I go vowing to watch my shields more carefully. It was quite a fight to get my 7 targets, but I didn't lose my shields again. When I got back to Fu City to collect my 15K, I found I had incurred 8K in fuel, ammunition, and repair cost, making my profit only 7K. Not much in the way of profits, but, +++ for experience gained. I'm a combat novice, and not a very good pilot so honing my skills is high on my list and found conflict zones are a good place to do that, providing you watch your 6

Sounds like you picked the "wrong" side in the conflict zone. Low intensity conflict zones tend to be lopsided, high intensity zones are more evenly matched.
