My first excursion Out There

And I made it to Betelgeuse (Betelgeuse Betelgeuse!).

O.M.G. Its a Super giant star. capitol S. underlined uper!

Of course there's a screenshot (spoiler tags make the reveal better... trust me):

Betelgeuse. Ancient Aramaic for "Armpit of the Giant"

Note the range to the star- bottom left. yup! I'm 3000 Ls away from it.. still fills my screen! (I wont go into the rather girlish shriek I made as I left hyperspace right up next to it) No wonder there are no planets around this beast... it ate them all in its expansion to this titanic size.

On the way I discovered these really cool ghostly T Tauri stars.. not as star systems of their own, but as "gas giants" around a big blue star [which to me are more visually stunning than Big Red]:

They all seemed to have rather huge rings around them... a part of their protoplanetary formation and stellar collapse?

Now, the trick is to get back tomorrow, after I rest up. This was partly just to set out and explore a bit, but also a test to see if by scanning the system, and returning to Sol itself to sell the data... if it will then be able to be purchased in the galaxy map for someone who searched for Betelgeuse and want to see whats there (which is not much at all but a good deal of Awe). We shall see if at some time tomorrow afternoon if Betelgeuse will be a purchasable system map.

Honorable mention on the return trip back to inhabited space (and safe port):

Yaknow, large white stars are nice and dazzling to look at, but their heat output can be a bit of a problem... And I dont just mean while fuel scooping from them

Sometimes its a bad thing to be closest to the spotlight :)

But wait! it gets cooler:

if you look closely at the details, I think I see a cool enough spot to land on, come some future expansion.

Aaah! kind of gives you that warm feeling, doesnt it? Right here. and there. and over there. and oh GOD! there TOO!!

Love the TTauri, I think the stars that are out there with a planetary ring system always look fantastic... been to a few Brown dwarfs like that and each time its awesome

well, that IS where it sits, if you picture Orions constellation holding his sword over his head [I cannot see the fainter stars where I am in city]... Betelgeuse would be his right armpit.... [shrug]

Great pics, you should definitely visit Hyadum if you are back out in that area. Hyadum is a giant yellow star with a gas giant in orbit extremely close. Flying through the asteroid field with a giant star filling the screen was just awe inspiring.
