My first exploration trip, some questions...

Hello everyone, I have been a space pilot for a very long time. In that time I have never gone exploring, I have been thinking about it for awhile and got the itch tonight and just took off into the black. I reached my first (First ever for me) undiscovered system about 2,600 ly from the bubble. I set myself a few parameters for this trip, I would fly out till I reached unexplored space, and when I did find it, I would scan and map every single thing I came across completing entire systems regardless...

Now it seems I have my work cut out for me, my first virgin system had 39 bodies and many of them have geological poi's (One planet even has 40+). I had a couple questions about the composition scanner and codex maybe some could help me with. I learned that you only have to composition scan one thing in the poi you vist, but unlike planets and things in system, is there any real reason to map geological poi? Do you get personal credit on each one, do you get credits? Do you have to composition scan every one to get 100% complete on the system? Any help is appreciate as is relevant info that may be helpful.

I’m not aware of any bonus for geo POIs but it’s always good to scan w the composition scanner to get codex bonus if it’s the first time your scanning that particular type within that galactic region.

What do the little book icons mean when you scan something like its a mat reward or something? Does it just mean that's how many entries went into the codex?

Yeah, it's just your first codex discoveries in that region of space. You're basically "confirming" the "rumours" about what discoveries are knocking about in that region of the galaxy. You can look at the codex to see what ones you've confirmed.

Thanks appreciate the insight. Im pretty sure theres over 200 geological pois. 39 Bodies. Been mapping and landing at them all night. I did about three per planet.

My entire night in my very first system, I saw some great sights. Highlights being a moon with a mountain jutting far out into around the range you start gliding in and a moon that looks like a white eye ball with red veins running through it. Mats are piling up also. Great night, I found a zen like peace and finally get the exploration part of the game I have only wondered about. I never realized how long it takes and how much work goes into scanning and mapping everything. Add in 15-20 poi touchdowns.

I think I did about 20 out of well over a 100 maybe even 200 haven't added them up yet. I fully mapped the system and moved on to thr next I found I just have a few more questions someone can help me with.

So when you scan poi, (In my case geological) when I have scanned and mapped the planet they are on is that enough to update them through edmc so edsm will show them and log them or do I need to touch down to composition scan each poi to make that happen?

I am relatively close to the bubble looking for missed fringe systems and I was curious if edsm would be able to log all the poi so in the future I could see if its some rare combo of mats thats worth coming out to top off with. I know that system with the crystal poi is all the rage and helpful to people and would like to make sure I can have everything updated to know. I just dont know if every select spot needs composition scanning to make that happen.

You don't need to map a planet to get it added to EDSM; the FSS scan is enough. EDSM tracks "first person to map to EDSM", but mapping doesn;t add any additional data. I don't think EDSM tracks numbers of POIs at all.

A planet's composition is consistent across the entire planet. The composition of nodules found at POIs is identical at every POI on the same planet.
