My First Exploration Trip

So I stripped my hauler down, added the advanced and detailed scanner and took a little jaunt out to the Elephant Trunk Nebula (I saw it on the galaxy map and was amused by the name).

After two weeks mooching round I made it back to Sol last night and earnt myself 5mil CR and gained "Pathfinder" status which was very rewarding.

Funny thing though, after I got back I was kind of itching to get back out! Anyone else get that?

I would have stayed out longer but I forgot to install an auto repair unit and my advanced scanner was down to 50% so I figured it was time to go back.

Just found the one earth type world and loads of water types and a quite a few suitable for terraforming.

I think all in all I like exploring. Although you earn more trading I like discovering new planets, occasionally I did get a little bored at times and skipped a few systems I should really have spent a bit more time scanning but most days I was rather thorough.

Oh and I my biggest shock of the whole trip was not black holes, binary systems, heat damage. It was being 800LY from Sol and getting a "weak signal source"!!! I thought to myself "Maybe this could be one of the non-celestial events DB had previously mentioned!!" No. It wasn't, it was a NPC Sidewinder, no bounty, just flying around. Probably lost I guess.

Anyone else found NPC's flying around so far from habitable space?

Regards,

I definitely couldn't wait to head back out, and went after only a week or less.

Been away many weeks now, 18,000Ly and counting, still heading in towards the core. For many explorers, once the bug bites, you'll always be wanting to head back out into the black.

Not sure how you managed to get your scanner knocked down to 50%? Too many scooping accidents? Fly safe Commander :D

my understanding is there is about a 1000 LY band around civilised space where you will encounter ships etc... and after that not a lot :)

Signal sources are meant to be there. When far out, they'll likely be a wrecked ship. They aren't common as far as I am aware (I haven't found one yet!). Haven't encountered an NPC out here ever, but also haven't found any RES sites - I didn't think they existed in unexplored systems?

Welcome to the frontier, Commander!
I once found a weak signal source 1000ly out containing prototype tech canisters. Interesting to hear lost sideys also show up.

Great to hear that you are having fun with exploring. Once you get the bug, you just wanna head back out.

I am currently in the Neutron Fields approx 18k l/y from sol and still heading outwards (slowly)

I will probably stay out until after the 1.3 patch as I only get 1-3 hrs play per day depending on family life etc. I just hope that the patch does not either nerf the explorers income or make the bubble too dangerous during the return to occupied space. I dumped my weapons for jump range so only have the option to run. It wasn't a problem on the way out but on the way back there is sooooo much data and play time to loose >.<

I'm on the return leg of a visit to the core, and I'm already planning my next trip.

You're absolutely right OP - Once you discover a couple of Earth Likes and scare yourself with a black hole visit, exploring becomes quite addictive.

I'd like a better view from the cockpit next time, so I'll mothball Angelina (Cobra) for now, and travel in style with a new Clipper.

The hauler is a great budget option, if you can cope with all the scary noises it makes when you're alone in deep, deep space.

Exploring does fit in quite nicely with family life. I can dip in when I want to, scan a few systems, park the ship by a nice gas giant with a ring system so I get a nice view and log out. I will do some more trading and combat until 1.3 comes out then if the patch is not quite engaging enough, it will be time to head back out!

The last trip and this one I havent seen an NPC or WSS after 100Ly. I did bump into another explorer 5Kylies out, which was wierd....but entertaining....after the initial wariness and realisation that we were both unarmed we had a good chat.

I also find exploring very addictive. I got back from the core a week or so ago and the next day headed straight back out, towards the core again as I passed through a few systems on my way back that deserve a revisit and a few screenshots. Once that's done, I shall head off in a totally new direction.
I'm in an ASP but I must admit I love the look of the Imperial Clipper. I'm sure I heard that in Power play we will be able add extra fuel tanks to our ships, is this true? As I know the clipper has a small tank which would worry me a lot.

Exploring can definitely get tedious at times. At the moment I am coming back from a trip that took me 20 kly out, and I am extremely anxious to get home. I am trying to keep scanning away, but I have a feeling that when I get within a few thousand ly I might just make a run for home.

I love exploring, don't get me wrong, but I have found it very helpful to have other music playing. The ED music is great, but switching up to Radio Sidewinder or something else can give it a different feel.

For the OP, congrats on making Pathfinder and nabbing an ELW!

Get your Exploration fix, OP. :) Myself, I'm taking a small break from Elite so as not to burn out on it, playing Pillars of Eternity instead. But I will be sure to head out into the Great Unknown again.
