*singing* Today is the day... today is the... Oh.
So today the Premium Beta rolled out and I wanted to share my first experiences with the new build.
As you all know for us PB-commanders we can now lay hands on multiplayer, supercruise, station landing, etc.
So the first thing I tried out was station landing. When entering the game there is one right in front of you, so, why not?
The first landing attempt was immediately a full success (tm). Which means I speeded too fast and in a too ardwark angle through that postbox slit, scratching the not-yet-dry paintjob of the Sidewinder and, from the sounds that made, also some centimeters from the station (ouch)
Then inside the Pad 4 was of course overhead, so point up, struggle trying to finally tame that speeddaemon, roll around aaaand, tada!, spot on. Perfect position, perfect angles, all well. I was in a kind of shock I got that b.ugger in position so well. But it did not dock. No way, sir. So left, right, up, down, screesh, tilted until I remembered I had to lower the landing gear (ouch)
At last inside the station - glorious - but with just too few bucks to do anything, so I left the station right after touchdown and elevator ups and downs to explore a different system with that new hyperspace thingy.
So out of the station it goes (professional 100% thrust, two taps at afterburner key). That right wing of mine must be a little longer than the left one, otherwise I can not explain where that metal noise came from. Spinning out of the hole something (someone?) crashed into me (or I into it, I think it was one of the advertisement plates, but I'm not sure, so a "Sorry...!" if I hit someone
) sending me into further spirals and into the black void, but still alive (ouch)
Okay, hyperjump. The first one went to Dahan. Bringing enough distance between me and that fiendish station, the jump was a piece of cake. At the other side I selected the system's station from the nav pane and cruised over.
Juuuust as I was about to reach my destination I got intercepted and pulled out of supercruise. Okay. Just a Patrol. It always is. In Privateer most of the interceptions have been patrols. Here it must be the same. I died a horrible death.
My first encounter was a pirate, of course, with the double amount of weapons, not being shock stunned and not feeling like a completely helpless rabbit in a ray of approaching headlights (all that single player training went out of the window). At least I tried defending my poor hide, bringing down his hull but it still was not enough. And that's the story of how I got my first free Sidewinder
(ouch)
Second attempt. This time I Bootis is the destination. All the procedures fulfilles I blasted through hyperspace and reached the system. Plotting a course to the Chango station and awhile bubbling along with 20km/s I heard that sound. Back to front view. Interdiction. Whut? Okay this time it's a patrol. For sure. It must be. Please? Phew. Hm. Say hello to fellow pirate number two. Still more weapons than I have. But this time I wasn't that stunned and made a viable fight. I'm so proud of me because he cowardly fled from my mighty onslaught. Muahaha. I did not manage to kill him because my target reticule went into space. With the rest of my canopy. And the cabin pressure (ouch)
However I still had nearly 2 minutes air left. Reverting to my original plan to dock at the station I plotted the course and set supercruise to it. Supercruise? Without a canopy and suffocating? Well, let's just try it, okay?
I was amazed it actually worked. Supercruise started and immediately I got jacked out of cruise and a friendly message appeared of yet another canopy breach. Did you know you can do that twice with ripping the front hole where once was glass even larger? Now you do (ouch)
Well, I reenabled supercruise and headed for that station. Can't be that hard, can it? Well... without a canopy there is no HUD and without it it's difficult to see where you're flying. I can say I nearly made it to the station before the air ran out. Now add to that the time to drop out from hyperspace, cover the distance to the station, request docking, roll over to the pad and touchdown I can hereby say you have no chance of pulling that stunt off. If the canopy breaches you're already dead and can just enjoy the undistracted view for two more minutes (I can touch the stars!)
After that I was so mentally shaken I needed a break and had to write down my first minutes of the Elite: Dangerous Premium Beta experience.
I hope you enjoyed reading the log of my short (Commander) life and all the dangers and surprises it brought to me. Now I know there is a meaning in "Fly Safe"
