My First Impressions

*singing* Today is the day... today is the... Oh.

So today the Premium Beta rolled out and I wanted to share my first experiences with the new build.

As you all know for us PB-commanders we can now lay hands on multiplayer, supercruise, station landing, etc.

So the first thing I tried out was station landing. When entering the game there is one right in front of you, so, why not?
The first landing attempt was immediately a full success (tm). Which means I speeded too fast and in a too ardwark angle through that postbox slit, scratching the not-yet-dry paintjob of the Sidewinder and, from the sounds that made, also some centimeters from the station (ouch)

Then inside the Pad 4 was of course overhead, so point up, struggle trying to finally tame that speeddaemon, roll around aaaand, tada!, spot on. Perfect position, perfect angles, all well. I was in a kind of shock I got that b.ugger in position so well. But it did not dock. No way, sir. So left, right, up, down, screesh, tilted until I remembered I had to lower the landing gear (ouch)

At last inside the station - glorious - but with just too few bucks to do anything, so I left the station right after touchdown and elevator ups and downs to explore a different system with that new hyperspace thingy.

So out of the station it goes (professional 100% thrust, two taps at afterburner key). That right wing of mine must be a little longer than the left one, otherwise I can not explain where that metal noise came from. Spinning out of the hole something (someone?) crashed into me (or I into it, I think it was one of the advertisement plates, but I'm not sure, so a "Sorry...!" if I hit someone :D ) sending me into further spirals and into the black void, but still alive (ouch)

Okay, hyperjump. The first one went to Dahan. Bringing enough distance between me and that fiendish station, the jump was a piece of cake. At the other side I selected the system's station from the nav pane and cruised over.

Juuuust as I was about to reach my destination I got intercepted and pulled out of supercruise. Okay. Just a Patrol. It always is. In Privateer most of the interceptions have been patrols. Here it must be the same. I died a horrible death.
My first encounter was a pirate, of course, with the double amount of weapons, not being shock stunned and not feeling like a completely helpless rabbit in a ray of approaching headlights (all that single player training went out of the window). At least I tried defending my poor hide, bringing down his hull but it still was not enough. And that's the story of how I got my first free Sidewinder ;) (ouch)

Second attempt. This time I Bootis is the destination. All the procedures fulfilles I blasted through hyperspace and reached the system. Plotting a course to the Chango station and awhile bubbling along with 20km/s I heard that sound. Back to front view. Interdiction. Whut? Okay this time it's a patrol. For sure. It must be. Please? Phew. Hm. Say hello to fellow pirate number two. Still more weapons than I have. But this time I wasn't that stunned and made a viable fight. I'm so proud of me because he cowardly fled from my mighty onslaught. Muahaha. I did not manage to kill him because my target reticule went into space. With the rest of my canopy. And the cabin pressure (ouch)

However I still had nearly 2 minutes air left. Reverting to my original plan to dock at the station I plotted the course and set supercruise to it. Supercruise? Without a canopy and suffocating? Well, let's just try it, okay? :D I was amazed it actually worked. Supercruise started and immediately I got jacked out of cruise and a friendly message appeared of yet another canopy breach. Did you know you can do that twice with ripping the front hole where once was glass even larger? Now you do (ouch)

Well, I reenabled supercruise and headed for that station. Can't be that hard, can it? Well... without a canopy there is no HUD and without it it's difficult to see where you're flying. I can say I nearly made it to the station before the air ran out. Now add to that the time to drop out from hyperspace, cover the distance to the station, request docking, roll over to the pad and touchdown I can hereby say you have no chance of pulling that stunt off. If the canopy breaches you're already dead and can just enjoy the undistracted view for two more minutes (I can touch the stars!)

After that I was so mentally shaken I needed a break and had to write down my first minutes of the Elite: Dangerous Premium Beta experience.

I hope you enjoyed reading the log of my short (Commander) life and all the dangers and surprises it brought to me. Now I know there is a meaning in "Fly Safe" ;)

What the?

No introduction phase to game.

I've just tried it and all was well until I realised there was no presets for my joystick like there was in alpha 1.1

So I bound my joystick and set up the controls and carried on

Then the space station disappeared before my very eyes...I thought the disappearing space station bug had been fixed? At that point I went into the menu to further customise the controls having forgotten that I left my ship moving at 25% speed...I came out into the cockpit again and I was inside part of the station - but not docked....It was weird...I opened fire at the station and got torn apart pretty quick just to start again...

I started again and found myself in dock....

First impressions: Some bugs, and the graphics have got alot worse since alpha 1.1

Who needs a windshield, anyway?

Inhale deeply and breathe fresh.... space dust...?

The disappearing station still does happen, but it's a lot less frequent these days. Only had it once in Alpha 4.

The controls do take time setting up.

How do you feel the GFX have decreased though? I've not noticed a reduction.

Other than the simple player tutorials, don't expect much in the way of handholds in multiplayers until the game development is much more advanced and most (if not all) systems are implemented and stable.

It is testing after all; to play and enjoy is a bonus. :)

My first experience was a bit weird at first.

First station wud not let me dock , i done all pre docking stuff even had lights and gear deployed and pad glowing blue, but all i got was hull scrapping sound an i was even on correct pad , after a 4-5 attempts i gave up and jumped to Asellus and bought some Fishing gear i did recon I Bootis was keen on getting some Fishing rods :D was interdicted both in Asellus and I Bootis, last 1 i barely managed high tail it out of there without taking hull dmg  When i delivered my cargo i made my first profit of 250 cr.

Man am i sweaty all over just from 1 run, but what a rush :D

On the docking assist graphic (where the radar usually is), the ship usually points up, but very occasionally it reverses for some reason and points down, which means you need to face the other way.

I tried aiming toward a locked destination start supercruise and watched the distance to it increase not decrease.

I think this is due to the landing platform itself being physically rotated the other way around sometimes for some reason.

I've seen this, normally with planets. I assumed it was because the planet was orbiting away from me, though it could just be a bug.

Seen that often too, and also assumed (not that word... ;) ) that is was the object orbiting away faster than my speed.
Perhaps FD can confirm that it is indeed this, else we should be bugging it.

I've just try it now.

My first landing was... rough, let's just say that. I forgot to set up the control for the landing thrust mode so I tried landing as if my ship was a plane, I don't recommend it :p
After setting controls up and being forced to change landing pad twice I was finally able to land on the station, yay! But then I noticed something weird, when I press the "Go to hangar" button it takes me to it, but after some moments it gets me back to surface. Has anyone experienced that? I've seen that it is kinda on the list of fixed bugs of the Alpha 4.0

Entering the landing pad hangar will send you back to the surface and then prevent you from undocking - Fixed (Beta 1.0)

I say kinda becaue it hasn't prevent me from undocking. Should I report it?

Apart from that and crashing on my first exit of super-cruise, it's awesome.

Hope you guys are enjoying it too

I'm on the third scenario (fighting the hot pilot) and he can out-turn my ship with ease. We're both in Sidewinders I assume. So, does his ship have upgraded bits that make him more maneouverable than me?

And that's all I've done so far, those three scenarios. I'm going to grapple with setting up my Warthog properly before I go 'live' (multiplayer). But everything is looking and sounding well pukka, innit. :)

Well, you are pretty much playing a fixed alpha right now. After posts like this, that I agree with, I personally don't really understand why this is even called Beta, I guess it was planned so that people could buy in and enjoy a bit of a game.

When I tried to explain others that Beta is usually when game is finished and only bugs need to be polished out of the game I was jumped by an onslaught of fanboys who said that all the other Betas in other online games were not really true Betas and what takes place here is a true Beta. Whatever really. I know people are excited and some lost their heads over it.

But what you are playing is pretty much just a tiny little teeny chunk of the game, polished alpha 4 in other words. Don't expect to see anything much. After initial excitement wears off people will realize that there is nothing really to be excited about... yet.

Nope, he just uses flight assist better than you...:p that's all !!! Keep trying to switch it on/off and you'll increase your turnspeed. :D

The blue area on your speed indicator is the sweet spot for optimal turning speed.
