Just wanted to share a little story about an encounter I just had in the game. It was my first experience with a player pirate. I know there’s lots of moaning and groaning about pirates so I figured that I'd write a little post about my experience. While my encounter was quick and brutal, it was also the most fun that I've had in the game to this point.
I'm on the last leg of a really long trading run (10ish jumps) to unload my last cargo run of the day before I upgrade my little hauler to a Cobra. This last leg would give me enough extra money to make sure I'm able to comfortably payoff any insurance in case I lose my new Cobra. However If I lost my hauler and the cargo it currently contained now, it would be a serious setback.
So imagine my consternation when I get interdicted just short of jumping out of hyper drive. I try to evade, but this one is harder from the others I've done. A real player? I do my best, but end up getting interdicted. As I get pulled out of hyper drive, I check my radar and sure enough it's a hollow triangle. I start spinning around looking for my exit and waiting for a text from the pirate telling me to drop my cargo. Instead I see lasers lance across my bow. Thinking that he was going to destroy me, I gunned it and hoped I could survive long enough until my Frame Shift drive was useable again.
The lasers continue to shoot past me and I see from my hull strength meter (I sacrificed shields for extra cargo slots) that I'm taking a beating. Then I see some message about missiles. Missiles!??! It's at this point that my heart is literally pounding out of my chest. I quickly throttle down and make a quick 180 hoping the pirate overshoots me and the missile too. I assume the missile missed as I didn't hear any huge explosions, but then I noticed a message about something being attached to my ship. What the hell is that?!?! Ok, accelerate to full throttle and a quick look at the frame shift cool down tells me I'm about half way there to being able to jump out. Looking at the radar again, I notice white dots all over the place behind me. I guess he's been shooting at my cargo door and all of my goods were spilling out. And it's at this point that I realize that the shooting has stopped. He's stopped to collect my goods and is no longer interested in blasting me to smithereens.
I continue to fly out of there and activate the frame shift drive. In the back of my head I'm still thinking, is he still after me? Is he suddenly going to come out of hyper drive and shoot me down before I dock?
I finally arrive at my original location that I was headed to and dock and am able to sell just a bit more than half of the cargo that I originally had. I'm coming down from my adrenaline rush now and realize, wow, that was the most exciting moment that I've had playing Elite since it's come out.
So to all the pirates out there, I say keep doing what you’re doing as it genuinely makes the game more interesting and not feel so static. I know not everyone enjoys the sudden heart pounding action, but this CMDR does!
