My first white dwarf jump

Just tried my first ever white dwarf jump.

Approached as normal, ready to overcharge the FSD, when it all went t*ts up. Got flashing messages saying "hazardous environment", then all systems went offline. I couldn't repair anything and I was spinning uncontrollably with controls non responsive. Canopy blew and when it go to 2 mins left, I synthesised more. Hull was down to 62% and dropping. Reboot/repair did nothing and I couldn't get any modules online. All I could do was sit and wait for the rebuy screen.

I've now removed white dwarf stars from the galaxy map.

I won't be doing that again.

They can be very unforgiving - when I was only a few weeks into the game I lost a ship twice to the same WD in the same game session... Once you get the hang of Neutron Star boosting WD's don't seem quite as scary - but be wary still as the exclusion zone around a WD is much larger than NS.
It does sound as if you either:
Hit the exclusion zone - or - Were not facing away from / got turned to facing the WD.

My 'rule of thumb' - WD's approach fast and skim the very 'top' of the flare - NS, approach nice and slow and skim the edge of the arm... pretty much works :)

The way you get out is point your fsd at something, do your best to stay facing and when the fsd has charged hit boost towards the target and you get away.

WDs are, as said, only to be used for jumping in a case of emergency.

BUT they are the most beautiful stars in the game! Worth jumping to, checking of there is anything worthwhile nearby (as everything looks incredibly cool with a WD in the background), statically turning your ship 90 degrees in any direction and flying to safety.

I use white dwarfs all the time, I always have the option on the route plotter to auto select boost stars to lower the amount of jumps I have to make, and more often than not, it's a white dwarf I use to boost.

Just be careful of the exclusion zone, and bring heat sinks (you sometimes need to get close enough to start over heating in order to boost)

Fell into a white dwarf once when first released the feature, and escaped the situation.

Also fell in on purpose a few times to be able to try and give tips for escaping.

Mostly it amounts to don't panic, remember heat sinks, have patience.
