my gold-standard and secret hope for "Engineers" crafting

The really useful thing that I hope Engineers will be able to craft is a class-2 or 3 device that combines the class-1 surface scanner with a class-1 advanced discovery scanner, into a single (larger, heavier) module.

We have gained so many more modules that ships can use out in deep space now compared to a year ago (SRV, limpets, tanks, etc) but the ships haven't grown any extra slots to keep pace, so explorers and adventurers haven't really been able to use the extra features very much. Rolling the two scanners into a larger device that requires a larger slot (instead of small slots) would be a quest worth undertaking - a useful prize to seek from the Engineers for us adventurers trying to operate beyond human space.

I really hope the crafting system is capable of that sort of thing.

Don't need them. Dev's have a reason why they are separate. One is to make some lower ships like Diamondback Explorer Have some limitations vs Larger ships.

Then what use is crafting?
It's not "crafting" in any interesting sense unless it allows meaningful differentiation.
You're also assuming that a combo-scanner would affect ship limitations without considering that the time/credits costs of building a combo-scanner would presumably account for and reflect the appropriate amount of ship differentiation. If someone wants to put their time and earnings into Engineers instead of into buying a larger ship, why shouldn't it be possible to make slight improvements to a small ship? If that isn't possible then Engineers seems kind of pointless.
(You're also assuming that the reasons for separate scanners all remain fully as valid today when the design was actually balanced for a game that had a lot fewer job-relevant modules competing for slots.)

I really hope Engineers isn't jumping through hoops just for stat-buffs on same-old pre-existing stuff.
Either Engineers can customize useful/interesting configurations, or it's hard to see why they should be of interest to me.

(Hence, the larger heavier scanner combo seems to me like a good "Gold Standard" test of whether the crafting system is meaningful.)


That said, I assume the crafting system is already so close to completion that any suggestions are too late. Ah well.
