my goods got nicked

I was doing a few missions and had a lot of cargo. I get a message. I have come along way for what's in your hold. I get interdicted, I slow to a full stop and we drop out. aggressor is a dangerous annie. during the battle my ship started to overheat, just as the pol arrive. I finished off the annie, but not before my cargo hatch failed and started to leak cargo. annie is down and I'm off collecting the goods I dropped. lucky I only dropped 2t. only one was mission cargo so it was that one I located first. I approached to about 50mtrs. when a npc did a flyby, promptly nicking my cargo.
this is the first time this has happened to me. had to make another stop to collect 1t to complete the mission.
is it a bug, mechanic?
has it happened to anyone else?

Sounds like an abuse of power. Drop their shields, and take back what is rightfully yours.

the t I lost was not illegal/dodgy. legit mine and pol decided he wanted it. I should have took it back but his comrade was a annie and I was low on matts and ammo. too much risk to take on them both. I spent 10 min traveling to a station to replace.
gets me the pol steal and most of the pirates that scan me say I have nothing they want. 60t gold and turns its nose up :)

It's also nice when they decide to interdict you right as you enter the stream of a neutron star... what timing...seriously

It didn't go well.
