My hints on combat.

Ok My combat techniques. I'm going to ramble and waffle and talk rot much of the time so forgive me.

OK this is how i fly and although its a tad risky i havent been shot down yet.

Throttling and Turning: When an enemy comes head on at you i slam into full reverse. This reduces the enemy's closing distance to you and allows you to get more shots on target. It also allows you to get on an enemy's tail when they break off. You can throttle up and get onto their six as they bank away.
If you go head to head and it looks like an overshoot, just before you pass each other throttle right back again, let the target pass then bank around after them and use lateral thrust to give extra turn. I will roll into the enemys direction and pull up on the stick and pressing down on the lateral thrust to give you that extra turning edge. Apply boost if you feel its needed to catch up with the enemy.
Also watching your speed reduces the chance of an enemy trying to ram you to death. It's like driving a car, you have to be mindful of all the other idiots on the road as well as your own driving.

In a multi NPC dogfight with lots of allies that could be hit with stray fire. take your finger off the trigger if you feel a friendly fire will occur. You cant stop the idiot cop coming in from a sharp angle but if you have a clear line of sight to the target with allies in the way... stop firing. get into a better position and fire again.

Running away: if you are out numbered or out gunned, run. Run away, fast. Don't get into a fight you think you can't win. There will always be more targets.
You get pulled out of warp by an interdictor. Full power to the engines, boost away, keep boosting. Don't turn RUN. Press J to jump away. Rolling with Yaw is a good way of reducing incoming fire while your FSD spools up.

Big ships: I like fighting with other cops and mercs around. They are a good distraction while you pick at a target. Forces the bigger ship to divide their firepower and attention. Yes you run the risk of losing the bounty, but there will always be more targets. Go for their FSD's it reduces the chance for them to escape, also the FSD will go BOOM if it reaches 0% killing the target. Some people go for power plants. Its up to you.

Equipment: First thing you should purchase for any ship you want to fight with is a power distributor. trust me its the best investment you will have and the cheapest too. An A3 Power distro for a Cobra III will set you back only 180k. That investment will make even a basic set of engines/shields and guns work many many times more efficiently giving you more power faster. Shield Cells, even a cheap set can mean the difference between life and starting in a Sidey again. Use em, no disgrace in it.

Combat against players: I don't: humans are unpredicable, cunning, ruthless. It's like getting into a bar brawl with a guy who looks weak but is infact a black-belt in some martial art. You are going to lose bad. I never fight humans. Too unpredicable. 'He who runs away lives to flee another day.' If you have to fight another player, fight dirty. Kick em in the nuts and stomp on em till they explode. They will do the same to you.

I hope this helps a bit. :)
