My hit has jumped away

...so are NPC's persistent enough for me to spend the next few hours looking for him or has he vanished for good? He wasn't at the NAV bouy, nor can I find him anywhere, there was no high wake for me to scan if he's jumped again and he's not appearing in SS's. Shall I keep looking or am I expecting too much from the game before 2.4?

To find a target, in the right sytem, you need to either honk your Discovery Scanner, or drop into a Nav Beacon and scan the beacon. Once either of these is done, you will get an update to the mission, telling you where to look for your target. You will be notified of the body in the system where your target can be found. Get into 'orbit' around that body, and wait for the specific USS that will include your target.

If chasing an NPC, jump out, then back into the system and they should respawn as though nothing happened.

I've never tried chasing one with a wake scanner...

Thanks guys :) Well I tried honking and scanning the NAV beacon in the new system, no sign of him. Guess that leaves me playing the glitchmeister and jumping back out and in again. I so hope things like this will be fixed and extended in 2.4, a mark should be persistant and need to get to a station to repair and refuel. Even more important if spacelegs are to happen, it would be ridiculous to chase someone down to a planet and upon persuing on foot to find them 'spawning' randomly like USS's. It should be a proper hunt/chase.

Every time I've hunted an NPC they would spawn in system supercruise. I'd just fly around patrolling until they showed up, then I'd interdict. I've never seen them already in a USS.

Only USS's with the big blue writing, kind of ruins the surprise, I'd rather have to search USS's until you hit the right one. I've had them appear at the NAV beacon several times, whilst I was scanning it. Surely that should be a very rare incidence not every third one.
This guy's being a fish in the ocean though, thanks for the tip ;)

If the target high wakes to a new system.
Returning to super cruise will spawn a fresh mission USS and you can start again.

If you have a wake scanner you can follow the target to a new system, where it will be in super cruise, and then drop to normal space. Here you can attack it agin and kill it. BUT this will not count as completing the mission. It seems that the target must be killed in the target system. Bit silly but it's how it's working at the moment.

When this happened to me, I jumped to supercruise right after the target. I was in SC, just cycling targets to see if he was around, when he interdicted me! I summarily executed him for his trouble. No mission update. ? So I go back to the objective planet, don't know why, but sure enough, a mission objective signal. I pop in, there's the convoy again, there he is again. This time, despite the fact that this was now our third fight and I was on 80% hull, he didn't get away. Mission Updated. Phew, thank gawd for that. lol

The missions would need to have a much higher payout to make it worth your while as a bounty hunter to chase him through the galaxy. I'd do it though, if the price was right and they didn't just carbon copy every other mission verbatim.

Pirate missions are cool, except it's very common that he will be camped around the farthest celestial body from the star, so look forward to long supercruise (wrong name imo) times. I've had them interdict me while I was looking for them. Maybe I am that clueless that the game takes pity on me.

I let one go yesterday (at the mission board) because his name was Pirate Lord: Ignorant. I couldn't bring myself to make his life any worse.

I did once, twas an epic battle across three systems. The NPC kept his sheild and hull levels with each jump, he even jipped me when I arrived in one system, something along the lines of "I thought you would have more sense". really emergent game play and a lot of fun. Sadly when I killed him the mission failed.... So much was right and FDEV failed at the last hurdle. One of the only times I felt like a true bounty hunter in the game then it fell flat on its face. Such a shame.

did you video and bug report it? Sounds great. I'm going to give it a go. I've never really messed with a wake scanner for anything besides getting data collected...

Almost awesome! I have a lot of excitement for the next update, really hope this is one of the things they focus on

Amazed to read this.

I've tried it a few times, on assassination missions. If he jumps, mostly he's not there when I follow. Yet when I go back to the mission target body, he respawns - obviously at 100%, unlike me - I still have whatever damage I had from the first encounter. Completely unrealistic, very disappointing.

I don't bother trying to follow any more if they run.

This is why we have Wake Scanners :)

Huh, apparently some people used them and it didnt work out for them.... did for me, weird.

There are also "informants" who pop up to help you re-acquire an assassination target.

On a variety of occasions I've had these send me messages asking to meet up at some location, they tell you to follow them somewhere else and that'll be the updated location of your target.

Tried that, then found out I also needed a wake scanner. What a waste of mission that was!!!

They keep pestering you though.
There'd be nothing to stop you from going to a station, buying a wake-scanner and then just waiting to be contacted by another informant.

Personally, I only take Assassination missions in my FdL, which already has all the toys they ever require.
