My Home System is at War! Um, What Does That Mean Exactly?

So, I'm a fairly new player but I have definitely found a great system to call home. I love this place, it has everything I need. Unfortunately, it's pretty close to the edge of a Power's zone of control. I was checking out my station's news feed and noticed a message saying the system was at war. What does this mean exactly? What can I expect?
