Slow learner that I am, it took me from halfway through Gamma and up until a couple days ago to figure this lesson out, but I learned it well: 'Metal Rich' is anything but. From my experience, it didn't matter if I was in a Depleted belt or Pristine... the best I could get out of 'Metal Rich' was perhaps 10% silver at most out of a dozen asteroids tapped.
When you're looking for a belt to mine, look for 'Metallic'. You don't have to go Pristine, although I'm sure that's the ideal; Major reserves net some pretty good gains.
Since you can no longer find an asteroid that belts out Platinum and be sure that you can come back to that same one over and over, I've found that the planet rings are the best source of mining now. The more asteroids you can tap in a short amount of time, the better, and the belts are pretty-much endless!
So that's my little addition to the knowledge base. Sorry if I've rehashed something already put out there, but I could never quite find any posts that were definitive on the subject.
