My mining experience, Day 1 - help needed

Started mining today.

Took my shiny new Cobra to a system where I had identified Pristine Metallic deposits, strapped a 4-bin refinery and 36 Tonnes of cargo with dual mining lasers and an A-class power disty. Ready to go.

Flew out to the asteroid belt. A few yellow blips on the radar but nothing showing much interest. Started to fly towards some 'roids, and let them have it with both barrels. Stuff flew off in random directions. Identified it. No palladium. On I go. 20 'roids later and the best yield I've found is 7% palladium. 10 'roids later I gave up and accepted 20% gold. Started shooting off bits, which flew off in random directions. Chased after them with my scoop. Forgot which asteroid I was mining, as there appears to be no way of marking them. Looked around for it again. Eventually found it.

Chipped off 5 pieces of gold, then it stopped giving me any more irrespective of how long I burned it for.

So....45 minutes of mining, one tonne of Gold.

Any tips? any advice? what am I doing wrong?

How do you avoid having to run around after the chips of 'roid so you can be more efficient?

And this is why I stopped mining. Got too tired of chasing after the fragments. You at least found something semi-valuable. The few times I tried mining I was stuck with crap. Watch an NPC mine and the chunks practically float into their scoops for them. Wish I could figure that out... some sort of a tractor beam would make it so much faster and actually worthwhile.

Bottom line is it seems to be all luck. How did you make your money for a 4-bin refinery? I'd just go back to doing that more. ;)

Yep. 3 tons of silver, one of platinum, one of gold. 1 hour's effort.

Back to bounty hunting for me.

Waste of time, waste of money.

I'd love to know how some people are making 500cr/hr (apparently) and 50kcr/20 mins is quite common, too it seems.

It can be a bit hit and miss. I found some good sources out in the middle of nowhere and was getting about 25% content of gold and palladium but also some crap as well.

42,579cr pure profit at current av prices. Anyway, tips. Ok, I have a couple. If you are mining the clusters around stars I've found that there is usually one specific cluster that pays off better than the others. Take where I am now, 4 clusters. Num4 Has a LOT of silver plus some of the other high value ores but nothing fancy 15 - 30% yield. Num 3 has only a few asteroids and only one gives of anything worthwhile, gold at about 20 - 30% yield. Num2 is a dead loss, very little high value ores, lots and LOTS low value ores and pretty bad yield all around. Num1 though is the mother load. Lots of asteroids and a good proportion of high value metals giving 50 - 60% yield. An hour there is giving me between 100 and 200k per hour with a 16 ton hold. Second tip, just chip one chunk at a time. I know it sounds slow but you soon get pretty good at snapping them up like a dog catching treats. Do it right and they come straight towards you and you hardly have to move. Hope that helps.

Best tip I can give is find a nice Metallic Ring (not a belt, the rings round a planet), preferably Pristine and knock a chunk off and see if it has Platinum or Palladium. If not move on. When you get the top 2 in any percentage mine about 8 off and then collect. Look on your HUD for the rock which should still be in range. A give away is the mining track left behind from the first mining. Chip off more bits till it stops giving you chunks. Collect and move on.

You will get 2 types of metals per rock so add them to the spare slots and jettison the excess if you need to make room. Leave 2 slots with the top P's at all times! It might take a bit of trial and error but I found a few hours and i can get around 300k easy.

I went from 15k to 500 in 2 days, Sidewinder to Adder to Viper in one, I chip and check, If its valuable I chip and collect one by one.
