Community Event / Creation My models of the Elite universe

Hello to all,

as stated in this thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=25874&page=5
i'm writing a sci-fi novel that is set in an universe partially based on the Elite series. Not canon, if a Elite canon exist, and with various substantial differences (for example, even if accidentally set in the same timeframe of ED, the technology is somewhat less evolved in some fields and potentially more evolved in others; the politics are similar but not the same, no Thargoids or other hostile alien races, etc.).

I don't know if I need an official license, anyway... partly for fun and partly to visualize the spaceships that populate my novel, I started to draw some simple 3D models of it. They are work-in-progress, unpainted and with few details, but I want share it.

As you can notice, these ships are inspired by FE2 and FFE, rather than ED.

The first is my version of the Imperial Courier. Call it "Mk II". The nacelles are an homage to the original Courier from FE2, but now they are aligned with the fuselage to match the center of gravity; the "wings" are fixed and larger to provide lift in the atmospheric flight. The the front laser is under the nosecone, not visible here; you can notice a second (smaller) laser in a small dorsal turret.

Then, we have the Imperial Trader Mk II. Unlike FE2 and FFE, now the third nacelle isn't the only difference: the fuselage is actually larger and bulkier to emphasize the different role. The other modifications are inherited from the Courier II.

The trilogy is completed with the Imperial Explorer Mk II. I've retained its menacing shape and streamlined the bow. The very heavy laser is dorsal instead ventral, to better match the center of gravity with the center of thrust of the four engines.

Some federal designs: the Panther Clipper, here reimagined as a heavy military assault transport. I always loved the Panther Clipper from FE2: its bulky design makes it look as a "flying fortress" and reminds me the M577 Armored Carrier from Aliens (the movie).

An Eagle fighter (let's say "Mk IV")

An original design of mine: Yorktown Class Long Range Battle Cruiser
It is an enormous ship. It has some connections with the original Long Range Cruiser from FE2. Note the hangar and the fuel scoops next to the big engines.

I'm working on the Asp and also on other capital ships, a federal destroyer, an imperial dreadnought and a civilian ship converted in a military cruiser for the Alliance.

What do you think? :)

Added a human figure to show the scale of some spacecrafts.

Firstly, the Courier, then the Panther Clipper and finally the battlecruiser.

I'm trying to draw an imperial capital ship (dreadnought class), that is both credible and classy. The official ED imperial capital ship is beautiful but a little too much weird for my tastes.

I'm trying to model a version of the famous Moray Starboat from Elite, FE2 and FFE.

I've never owned a Moray in Frontier or First Encounters... my "medium" ship was the Constrictor, then I switched to an Asp and finally to the Courier.
But that ship has a very original and funny shape, with a strong personality that distinguishes it from most of the other ships.
Plus, the entire backstory of its submarine capabilities is fascinating.

I've tried to mantain some of the original lines, declinated in a slightly more streamlined appearance. The "sub" role is fully restored with a dual magnetohydrodinamic engine for underwater use, next to the main engine exhaust. I've added some fins for attitude control underwater.

Here some rough sketches.

They look promising.
What are you using to model the ships?

BTW

Spoiler tags are a good idea in picture heavy threads. ;)

I'm using Anim8or. It's freeware.

Here an improved version of the Imperial Explorer and the Panther Clipper:

I know of it from a while ago. It is good to see that it is still going. :)

I started to learn Blender until ED stole my life. ;)

I don't know the ships from the old games, so I cant compare them to anything.
You have caught the essence of power and have some nice curves on them.

Keep posting.

This is the Imperial Explorer from FFE:

This the Panther Clipper from FE2:

For the Explorer, I've mainly modified the placement of the four engines, to better match the CoG (center of gravity) of the ship. What's the advantage in having off-center engines if we must correct the asymmetric thrust? Engines aligned with the CoG from the beginning makes much more sense. For the same reason, in my version of the Courier the engine nacelles are aligned with the main fuselage.

My interpretation of the Panther Clipper is pretty close to the original. Main modification are four auxilliary nozzles besides the main engines. Also, I've emphasized the armament of the ship: in my imagination the Clipper (the largest playable ship of the original FE2 game) is a military assault craft, a sort of "flying fortress".

I'm working on the Asp but i'm not yet satisfied with it. Also I have some ideas for the Krait, the Constrictor and... the Lifter.

A first glance of my reinterpretation of the Python Freighter, more adherent to the original version of FE2 and FFE (http://www.jades.org/pixhost/s-python.gif).

Main modification are the auxilliary nozzles at the aft, and the two turrets (top and bottom) instead of the original front and rear hardpoints.

I'm back with a new little pill: the sketch of an armed escape capsule, turned on a personal short-range interplanetary spacecraft (still WIP).

It was obviously inspired by the Stowmaster Capsule from FFE. I took also inspiration by the Swordfish II of the Cowboy Bebop anime, the Narcissus escape capsule from Alien and... this:

A comparison with the human figure shows how small this spacecraft is.
The two spikes at the wingtips are 20 mm guns for self defence.
