my new favorite for mining... Updated

A Cobra III... I used to hate the Cobras because of the offset cockpit, but in VR, it's not really noticeable. The cockpit has nice visibility for flying under the ring and pinging roids.

Anyway, no limpets, a DSS, pulse wave scanner, seismic launcher and an abrasion blaster, class 4 shield, everything else cargo. You end up with 32 tons (about 2roids worth), which I had filled with all void opals and worth 52 million...

With DD5 drives you can cruise along at 400+ and the maneuverability is really nice. The scooping is a bit harder than it should be, but not Python bad.

Coming back to sell was a trip... As I jumped in I noticed a commander, but before he could make a move an NPC Vulture latched on. It was a low security system but a security ship popped in almost right away. I boosted away until it the FSD cooled down and low waked. Immediately the commander moved to intercept so I emergency dropped, selected the next system. While waiting for the FSD to cool down a cop dropped in and about the time for me to spool up the commander made an appearance.

I jumped into the next system and there are 2 NPCs in system and I get the big haul message. I evade them and jump... Nobody there. Whew, time to think about it for a change. I jump back and everything is quite, make it to the station and sell all the opals.

Pretty wild time! Opals appear to be a pirates best friend.

Update: Today I took the Keelie out and like it better than the Cobras, the visibility is very good and the maneuverability with DD5 drag drives, while not on par with the Cobra III, is quite good. And, unlike the Cobras, it's a great scooper. Plus, I can take fighter and not feel so totally naked. 40 tons of cargo works out pretty well.

I use my Anaconda.

Sure, I often get wedged in the rocks, but I don't have to stop mining until I'm done for the day. :D

2xABs, 2xSCs, 4xGuns, Bi-weave shields. 300~ limpets.

What do you need limpets for?

For blowing stuff up, you don't.

I'm planning on buying additional mining equipment tomorrow.

I underestimated the value of the new tools, and I now want them all.

Thank you, my point exactly... If you're out looking for say, LT Diamonds, then it pays to take all the traditional stuff and the drill missile, but if you're after stuff like opals, then there's no real sense to taking anything but a blaster and seismic missiles.

The stuff that you use a mine laser is more of a pain in the butt to scoop and you need prospectors to maximize the extraction. The stuff that is removed using the blaster is a big hunk of easily scooped material so no need to pack collectors and you can find/blow the roid without a prospector. In a small ship such as the Cobra III, it's much more profitable to lose the collectors and prospectors.

Hang on hang on... I was only talking about the collectors.

I thought you needed a prospector to target the fissures?

No, you can visually see the fissures and if you shoot them the siesmic charge will stick. The only issues is if you over-cook the charge and go into the red zone you have no way to disarm the charge. However, if you do 2 high charges and one medium you will usually hit the perfect zone. sometimes you need to stick a low or 2 to bring it up to full white.

I see. Hadn't thought of the Mk I Eyeball.

If you have acccess to it, the Cobra IV is very good for all types of mining and it can kill npc pirates as well.
