My Oculus just arrived!

Don't have too much free time tonight but I'll be setting it all up sometime this week. A friend of mine was telling me I might need to 'transfer' my ED over to an Oculus version or register it with them to be able to play it properly in VR but I'd rather not go through any unnecessary steps so I guess the question is what's the best way to play my Steam copy of the game in VR with an Oculus?

On Steam there is a separate Elite Dangerous VR version on the launcher. At least there is on my account. (I don't have a VR setup, but this option is always there)

Not sure about having to register the game with Oculus though.

Oh how I want to do VR, I wanna wanna I wanna, but I multitask while playing my games, using my iPad etc but more importantly catching up with a plethora of TV shows all of which would be very difficult if not impossible playing in VR.

You dont need to do it, in the oculus store, enable unknown sources in general settings, and you are good to go

Don't do it in the Oculus store - it takes over E D ---- I believe that after you install the Oculus on your machine all you need do in E D is "Enable HMD" in options / graphics.

If you install it using the key in the Oculus app, it makes a new install of E D - over 13GB.

I fell foul of this when I installed my Rift and used the key from Frontier to install the game in Oculus - thereafter I couldn't get the game to run without Oculus taking over and forcing VR. I had to uninstall Oculus to get control of E D back, have not got round to re-installing it again, that's a job for tomorrow. I know better now thanks to the good folk in the V R sub-forum.

Enable Unknown Sources in the Oculus App as VonWulff says. After that, all you need to do is start Elite: Dangerous and go into Options. Click on Graphics, then change the 3D option to the setup that best matches yours - if you have headphones, that's "HMD Headphones", for instance.

There's a bit more info on this link.

I can't answer your question, but I can ask you one... :)
How long did it take to receive after you ordered? and did you order directly from oculus or a 3rd party?
(ordered mine yesterday, which is why I'm curious)

FWIW, there's a launcher option /novr - create an additional desktop link (icon) and add the option to the command line like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous\EDLaunch.exe" /novr

ED should now start up without the Rift. The only problem is that it will start the game in windowed mode and not fullscreen. Use Dr. Kaii's EDProfiler (http://www.drkaii.com/tools/edprofiler/) to switch between several graphics profiles, and there you are. Oh, and this doesn't switch the audio profile, so you may have to switch to a different audio output for 2D.

Actually, I play ED via all possible options - directly via ED Launcher desktop links as above (I use Steam, too, the launcher is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous\), via Steam Library (base game, Horizons, Steam VR, you have to install the latter to use it) or from inside Oculus Home (you can get an Oculus partner key for free from the Frontier Store). The last option means a second 13 GB install and is not necessary, sometimes it's just more convenient to start from Oculus Home. YMMV.

HTH,

I ordered mine from Amazon last Monday. The touch controllers arrived Tuesday and the Rift itself on Wednesday, despite a 1 week delivery estimate. It's currently unavailable on Amazon though, so that's about zero help.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Yes I bought it in the sale £399 free postage with extra sensor and touch controllers included.

maybe one day when there's an AR version :)

Ordered on the 10th directly from Oculus and they tried to deliver on the 14th but I wasn't home so I got it today instead, was UPS if that makes any difference, also its 2 boxes so if they give you 2 different tracking numbers thats why. Controllers are only arriving tomorrow and that's with no failed attempts so people are generally getting the controllers later than the headset.

Just got mine last week and I have the steam version. Like others said you need to enable outside apps in the Oculus app but for me the HMD didn't show up in ED when launching it with the steam launcher. I had to go into the ED folder and launch in from there to bypass steam.

Malcyorks is correct (post #7)
But you will have to enable unknown sources in oculus store if you want to download and play some non oculus software. Same as setting unknown sources on your mobile or tablet so you can download.

Thanks.
Ordered mine sunday straight from oculus. Unfortunately the order status still has a status of "Order"... well duh
Hopefully I hear something by the end of the week.

Ordered mine from oculus and it took 4-5 days to appear. Via the Netherlands to the U.K.

Flimley

There's a couple of programs that let you essentially put a movable panel in VR space, then you can put the panel anywhere in the cockpit (I put it above the HUD) and watch videos from Plex or Netflix or wherever.
