Disclaimer: I didn't play the alpha at all; work and visiting relatives ate up all my time. Also, while I'm not having any performance issues (so far), I'm not disputing that others are having real problems. As far as my hardware goes, I have an Nvidia GTX 1080ti, 32 GB of RAM, and an I7 processor that was near the top of the line when I built this computer 4 years ago.
Ok, with that out of the way: Wow, Odyssey truly got off to a good start with me! First and foremost: Thank you Devs for splitting up the controls into four separate sections: General, Ship, SRV, On Foot!!! Not only did this make things easier to find, it also let me keep my customized binding for the first three while loading in the presets for the "On Foot" section! Every previous update where they added new controls - like the new camera settings in Beyond - I was forced to either manually fumble to set up the new options or blow out all my other settings just to see what the defaults are. Not this time!
Woohoo!
Secondly, the tutorial was very fun and immersive - flashing us back to before we got our sidewinder when Elite Dangerous launched. I had a lot of fun with the tutorial. I loved wandering around the base, interacting with all the objects, pulling scrap from the SRV, restarting the power, etc. The ground combat was fun. Best shooter ever? No, not even close. Good enough? Yes. I didn't have any problems killing them all, enjoyed the combat effects, etc. I'm sure the issues others have reported are real and will hopefully be addressed (e.g. all knowing AI, frame rate drops, etc.), but I didn't see any of that.
So far the only negative I've encountered is that my commander now looks like he's either aged 40 years, run into a ghost, or run out of hair dye I didn't know he was using - his jet black hair looks almost white. Meh. I'm sure that's a bug that will either be fixed or that I can fix myself later by adjusting the Holo Me.
In conclusion, I'm not white knighting for FDEV and saying everything is fine. Clearly it isn't based on all the reports (and them having to disable FCs from moving temporarily). I just wanted to leave a little positive feedback as everything I read yesterday was so depressing I was going to put off even trying Odyssey (which I pre-ordered months ago) until this weekend. Even if you hate almost everything else about Odyssey, you've got to give them credit for newly divided control mapping. Love it!
I'm going to play some more this evening. Hopefully I won't run into the more serious bugs others have; if I do, I'll log it with the bug tracker.
Until then,
o7.
