My proposal for a new interstellar drive

I wanted to ask if it is possible to create a new type of drive that allows traveling between the stars? . I am talking about a drive that would allow travelers to move without firing a frame shift drive.[big grin]

That won't happen, unfortunately, and it's been suggested before. The problem is that each star system is an "instance" (no one's server is powerful enough to simultaneously maintain 400 billion systems). The jump you experience is actually a loading screen while the instance is either created, or the servers are matching you with one that has already been created.

I didn't think you could, I'm sure you cannot go from system to system in supercruise

You can go to other stars in same system, but nothing outside of the system you are in

That must have been another star within a binary system.
To travel between systems, you have to jump.

Correct. In some systems, the "other" star can be as much as 500,000 light seconds away.
Going from "system" to "system" may be possible for extended periods in SC but the "instance" for that system simply won't load because you need to jump into it.

Example: Going from Alpha Centauri to Proxima Centauri is possible because Proxima is considered to be part of the Alpha system. However, going in SC from Alpha Centauri to Sol would take a LOT of time and you'll never actually arrive in the Sol system because that instance won't load.

there are scientific reason in the game why we cant navigate during hyperspace.

1: The way hyperspace jumps work is that the FSD uses a select amount of fuel to preform the jump instantaneously, combined with help from the Ship's sensors and Ship's AI to lock onto a tachyon signature of a star to plot a hyperspace jump. This way you dont crash into all those stars you pass by during hyperspace. There is no way that you are going to manually hyperspace without crashing into anything especially since Hyperspace travels upwards of 20,000 times the speed of light depending on FSD mass and fuel limits.
Additionally you cant really see anything because of the quantum density of the ship at the time, aside from the 2-5 stars you pass during the jump depending on the density of the stars in the area you are in.

2: the ship's AI needs a tachyon signature to preform a hyperspace jump, meaning navigation is 100% restricted to stars. the sheer distance the ship travels at the speed it does means it needs to do additional calculations.

3: Changing direction or destination during hyperspace is impossible due to the fact that the ship's instruments are mostly blind during a hyperspace jump thanks to the ship's quantum density at the time, and the Ship's AI plots the jump arc before it enter's hyperspace and not during.
Hyperspace uses an energy threshold that is significantly higher than the threshold used for Supercruise. so the ships quantum density is shifted more drastically causing sensor blindness.

4: while you do see stars pass by you while in hyperspace, the quantum density of the ship is shifted to such a degree light from further sources is not seen as well as the light from stars that are immediately near you as you pass them.

Even if they made a new drive that let you traveled between stars you would still have the problem of potentially crashing into stars (the likelyhood of happening going up as you get closer to the galactic core) and having sensor blindness because the ship's quantum density would still need to be shifted.

I'd just like to be able to arrive at a targeted point without needing to watch multiple level time countdowns to the point where quitting the session becomes a real thought. You jump into supercruise and spot some signal sources, you select one.. just right there... 2 minutes later you're still trying to get there. The timer now on the sources really drives home the time sink involved. I don't want instantaneous drop, but something that doesn't put me to sleep would be cool.
