After building two "dark-type rides" in RCTW (Jurassic Park and Hollywood Backlot Tour), I decided to give Planet Coaster a try with my third ride. So in June I started "Pure Imagination" and worked on and off on it (as time allowed). I scripted the ride with a narration, but then two days ago I learned Gene Wilder (the influence behind my ride) passed away. So I scrapped the narration and decided, instead, to do variations of the song "Pure Imagination" throughout the ride as a tribute to him. I was amazed at how many covers there are. It's a testament to how amazing the song is.
The concept behind the ride isn't chocolate. There's no chocolate factory in it. It's just your imagination... whatever you conceive, you can see.
Outside of Gene Wilder's awesome "Pure Imagination," my favorite cover version is by Fiona Apple. It's very "haunting" and worked perfect for one of my scenes.
When Gene Wilder was first asked to play the role of Willy Wonka, he read the script and told the producers that he would do it, but only if he could write in one scene that wasn't in the script. He said if they agreed to this scene, that he thought was vital to the character, that he would do it. If not, then he would decline the role. They asked him what the scene was. It was...
When Willy Wonka first comes out of the factory, he is walking slow with a cane and a limp. He approaches the gate and just before reaching it, he falls forward, then does a perfect roll onto his feet to the cheers of the crowd.
The producers were puzzled by this and asked "why?" He responded, "because from that point on, people won't know when he is telling the truth or not." Brilliant.
My favorite scene in this ride is the last scene (the Pirate scene). The entire ride is a six-minute journey that I hope you enjoy. And my hat is off to you awesome Workshop creators for the things you provide that are inspiring and make park journeys more "magical." Thank you for your work.
