Newcomer / Intro My questions after my 5 days playing!

First off, great game! loving it, and it can only get better :D But, I still have some questions that I do not quite understand yet, so I shall compile a list! thanks <3

1. If I buy a module, and sell it, I notice sell price is same as buy price, so does that mean I should just keep my current ship pimped out, then when I can afford a new ship, I could sell everything on my old one and start pimping my new one out? Seeing as insurance is only 5%.

2. If I die with unclaimed bounties, I know I lose them due to data being stored in your ship, but if I visit a station where I cannot claim my current bounties, does this data get "backed up" so I can get my ship blown up, but keep the bounty data? ( I want to get a huge pay out before I cash in )

3. Scan data you can sell, same as above? Do I lose it if my ship dies, or does it get a back up at a station so I don't have to fly 20 jumps to sell it, I can once again, amass loads of data and get a big payout at once.

4. If I am "wanted" and someone attacks me to claim my bounty, if I defend myself and kill them, do I get more bounty on me seeing as it was self defence? Same goes for when the cops are trying to blow me up..

5. I've not really moved much from my starting zones, is there a point in moving unless the obvious exploration? Example being eve online where the further out into space you get, the more dangerous it becomes, enemies become harder and so on.. Does this game have a similar system?

6. Say I shoot some innocent guy by mistake, and it pops up saying 400 bounty added or something, if I shoot them again, does it keep going up per shot? or does it only increase more if I kill them?

7. With bounty hunting, you get a cash reward for killing wanted crims, but what do you get if you decide to be the pirate? You get nothing for killing the ship, all you get is some cargo, most of the time you will have to smuggle it past the cops and sell it on the black market at a mark down of the actual sell price making peanuts and gaining a massive bounty / fine that could end up costing you more than what you make... questions is, why bother apart from the obvious annoy people factor :)

8. Last question :D If I get a bounty, and some dude kills me, is my bounty wiped, or does it still stand until I pay it off? Same for fines, I assume fines stay.

Sorry for maybe long question post, but oh well

1. The sale price of your ship always includes whatever you have spent on upgrades, so no need to sell them off first.
2. & 3. No, as far as I know the data is not stored anywhere except on your ship and is lost if you die before cashing in.
4. If you kill a clean ship that is another crime and will increase your bounty, even if it is self-defense.
5. The main reason for changing location might be to join in a story line unfolding elsewhere in the galaxy or to move closer to your faction home-world if you align with one of the factions.
6 Once you have hit someone that is attempted murder: one fine (not a bounty). If you kill them that is murder: an automatic bounty.
7. Piracy is not my thing, but it certainly doesn't seem very easy to profit from yet. Some tweaking may be needed. It seems the only way to make a substantial amount is to be so well-tooled that you can take on a big ship and force it to drop lots of high-value cargo or shoot out the cargo hatch. (The hatch disruptor doesn't seem to work very well, I've heard). Of course, if there are lots of canisters floating round you need a big cargo bay to pick them up!
8. I believe existing fines & bounties become inactive after death, but stay "on the books". If you commit another crime they are reactivated. (I'm not absolutely sure, perhaps someone else could confirm).

Glad you're enjoying the game. See you in space, commander.

Hi Commander, welcome to the game. I'll see if I can help a little.

1. If I buy a module, and sell it, I notice sell price is same as buy price, so does that mean I should just keep my current ship pimped out, then when I can afford a new ship, I could sell everything on my old one and start pimping my new one out? Seeing as insurance is only 5%.

Yes. Strip as much much of your ship as you can before you sell it. The outfitters will pay you 100% value, the shipyard will only pay you 90%.

2. If I die with unclaimed bounties, I know I lose them due to data being stored in your ship, but if I visit a station where I cannot claim my current bounties, does this data get "backed up" so I can get my ship blown up, but keep the bounty data? ( I want to get a huge pay out before I cash in )

No. If you die you lose them. Period.

3. Scan data you can sell, same as above? Do I lose it if my ship dies, or does it get a back up at a station so I don't have to fly 20 jumps to sell it, I can once again, amass loads of data and get a big payout at once.

Map data is also stored on your ship, and also lost if you die.

4. If I am "wanted" and someone attacks me to claim my bounty, if I defend myself and kill them, do I get more bounty on me seeing as it was self defence? Same goes for when the cops are trying to blow me up..

Yes, murder will increase your bounty, unless the victim is wanted. If you are not wanted and you get attacked the attacker gains a bounty so you can defend yourself with impunity, but if you ARE wanted and attacked the bounty hunter doesn't gain a bounty, so your self defence is still murder.

5. I've not really moved much from my starting zones, is there a point in moving unless the obvious exploration? Example being eve online where the further out into space you get, the more dangerous it becomes, enemies become harder and so on.. Does this game have a similar system?

Moving away from the core systems results in lower (but never zero) populations. Moving closer to the core gives you higher ones. The whole galaxy is dangerous.

6. Say I shoot some innocent guy by mistake, and it pops up saying 400 bounty added or something, if I shoot them again, does it keep going up per shot? or does it only increase more if I kill them?

You get a first bounty when you attack them and a second if you kill them. If you don't want to play a piratey type your best bet if you accidentally get a bounty is to jump away and pay it off as quick as you can. Hint: outposts don't have security ships to scan you.

Some men just want to watch the world burn

8. Last question :D If I get a bounty, and some dude kills me, is my bounty wiped, or does it still stand until I pay it off? Same for fines, I assume fines stay.

If someone kills you when you are wanted they claim your bounty and you are no longer wanted. FYI you actually pay that bounty when you want a new ship. Fines are "paused" (cant remember the real word) but are reactivated if you commit another crime and the authorities notice you. Good idea to pay them off quick as you can before they reactivate.

Sorry for maybe long question post, but oh well

No problem. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies and the welcome!!

You guys have covered everything I needed to know, I have a little extension to question 1 :) I'm in an adder ATM, and my jump range isn't huge, I was thinking of buying a better jump drive so I can get 20 jumps away to sell my data, if my understanding is correct from what you have put, I can buy the stupid expensive one, fly 20+ jumps away then sell the drive back and buy my basic one again and lose no credits? I think that's correct!

Regarding your first question. Apart from avoiding the 10% tax on the ship, by selling the modules you have them available to repurchase after you switch to your new ship. This means if you sell your weapons you can repurchase them, even if the station doesn't normally have them for sale. I found this really useful when I upgraded my Eagle to my Adder, in essence I just kept the same weapons.

Edit: to answer your extension to q1, yep that sounds doable. But once you get the bigger one you might want to keep going further and further.... You may never be able to part with the new drive (-:

Yes, you could buy then sell if you want. Just to point out tho, you don't need to do 20+ jumps, you need to travel 20+ lightyears. If your adder's empty you should be able to do that in 5-6 jumps and if you have a fuel scoop it won't even cost you anything more than wear and tear.
