My second exploring trip - VY Canis Majoris

I'm a green explorer and a new player so I don't have much exploring under my belt, but when I got bored with slaving away in the bubble I decide to buzz out and check out an interesting landmark. My last trip was to Maia and Merope in a Diamondback Explorer. Checked out the black hole and hung out with barnacles for a bit. I was noobish enough that I equipped a much too small fuel scoop and was fueling at 100/s at maximum. Was a fun trip bouncing around brown dwarves trying to figure out how to scoop and filter out the map. KGB Foam and all that.

Anywho, my second trip went much smoother. I could afford an AspX, had a big fuel scoop and all the equipment I needed. The trip was a bit longer than I anticipated and it made me realize I probably have no real desire for a Sag A run unless there's more incentive or more interesting planets to investigate (atmospheric landings and all that). I buzzed out to VY Canis Majoris and boy is that star huge. Some pix.

Found a moon orbiting a water world near the bubble and went for a joyride.

Smacked into this planet like an idiot, thank goodness for 4 pips to shields - brought my hull to 95% - Great sunset(?) though! I think this planet was just a couple ls away from its star.

Time to go, a big star to see!

Seeing Barnard's Loop from this angle was interesting. Clearly I was making progress as I'm seeing the side of it here. I considered cutting over to this nebula but so many unknown permit restrictions dissuaded me. What's going on over there anyway?

Stopped at a moon orbiting close to the rings of a gas giant. Why not? Getting closer to Canis Majoris now.

I hear stories of people jumping into very close binary systems, but that seems to happen close to the galactic core from what I've read. I was pleased with how close these guys were, and it was safer too! Almost there...

Observe the faint red dot over the center of my ship. Here we go!

Aw yeah. Jumped in 5k ls away from this thing. I looked it up and i'm supposedly the distance of Saturn away from the sun right now...

This poor dwarf star. I'm 3ls away from him, Canis Majoris is the distance of Neptune away right now......... (10k ls)

I returned safely home. Found my first Earth-like on the way back. But I did realize that while this is great to do to break up other aspects of the game, I don't think i'm going to become a full fledged explorer. I was already wanting to hop in my Vulture and blow up pirates when I arrived. Maybe I should make two accounts like some people do.

I have plans to check out Barnard's loop when it opens up at some point. I also want to head back to Merope and see all the drama that's unfolding there with the game lore.

Thanks for reading! Stay frosty.

Play Your Way and all that :D

Some people have to fly away for months or more at a time - whether the exploring bug just bites them that hard or they don't like what the bubble has to offer, but even just a few days or a single session going there and back again can reward you with the most fantastic panoramas you'll see in pretty much any game. Whether you explore a little or a lot, have fun and keep sending us postcards, this batch has some beauties in it.
