My Ship is My Castle

What attracted me to ED and other recent space sims is the idea that I am a person, and not a spaceship.

Equally important is the idea that spaceships have more in common with ocean faring vessels than with airplanes. My ship is my home. My castle. It is where I live. Where I sleep. Where I eat.

When I'm exploring the Frontiers of human space, I think of people circumnavigating the globe in a sailboat, living in their ship for weeks at a time.

This is the main reason why I can't wait for the ability to walk around my ship -- even if there is nothing to do when I stand up, out of my seat. It is a key part of my RP. And a key part of my immersion. It's why I buy houses in games like Skyrim (they serve little purpose other than allowing me to feel like I have a place in the world).

With this in mind, I wonder if we can speculate about what lies beyond the cockpit doors behind me? Does the Cobra have a galley? Does it have proper quarters? If so, how many? There are after all, two chairs in the cockpit.

What about the other ships? Does the Anaconda have a ready room? A captain's quarters? A common area?

Apparently falcon de lacy are NOT good at making fridges that stay cold, even in the year 3300! Its a nightmare on long trips, I have to store my coke in the cargo holds to stay cool...

On the other hand, I saw some concept art somewhere that showed the cobra with a lift behind the cockpit. Perhaps I am wrong and it was for one of the other ships like the hauler, adder or asp?

My ship is my castle, my temple, my home! My dear, sweet love! I call her Deirdre and I haven't lost her yet.

I only think the cobra has sleeping bunks, lavatory, and maybe a small area for food preparation and dining. It's not that large, and it has to make room for a lot of cargo space and equipment.

I found it quite difficult to locate the lavatory in the Asp, which tends to make prolonged exploration an eye watering experience :D

Well - the Viper apparently doesn't even have one:

I just pee through a tube connected to the cargo bay. A 1.99 credit DYI improvement. Just have to make sure you put the cork on the tube after wards or everything gets sucked through it to the vacuum of space!

I am very much looking forward to doing this (walking around, not peeing out of a tube), maybe more than anything else. Being able to walk around the ship will add to the scale. Though, when this occurs I suspect some of the models will have to become a bit more detailed...

Hmm.. when we are able to walk around our ships will we have some basic needs like food and whiskey? It would be fun to bring some survival aspects to the walk about and EVA in/on ships.

It would be cool to have to manage basic supplies (water, oxygen, food) before setting out to explore. That being said, even 1t of food would last a while...

This is my ship. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My ship is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
My ship, without me, is useless. Without my ship, I am useless.
....

Sounds familiar ;)

And if your low on food and water while exploring maybe having to land on life bearing planets to scavenge, or "mine" ice belts could be an option while exploring.

My ship is certainly my castle.

I have a Lakon Type 6 converted into an explorer ship. I ended up having the two Class 5 bays left over after I had all the necessary gear so I "converted" them into an entertainment center and a gym to deal with long term gravity deprivation ;) (obviously just in game, technically the cargo bays are there, but since I won't be needing them, why not give myself some extra space so I don't go stir crazy? ;)

Well, you could mine the rocks in the ice belts to get water (and also oxygen / hydrogen) at least. There are no shortages of those.
