My ship just did something really cool

What kind of voodoo ritual do I have to perform in order for my ship to do this on command!? This is freakin awesome!

At first when I recalled it, and it came down to hover, I thought, "man it's gonna fly away like there's no room to land here."

But then it just kept sitting up there, and then I thought, "great it's bugged now I'm gonna have to log out and back in."

I ran out of the settlement to get a better look at what it thought it was doing and as I ran closer I realized the blue ring was on the ground! Sweet!!!

My ship beamed me up, I sat down in the pilot seat, and boosted away like some kind of action hero.

I've had that happen when the terrain won't allow for a landing. Unfortunately, I've never seen this happen when I'm in the SRV; it seems to only happen on foot.

You're right, though. I wish there was a 'hover like a badass' button.

This has happened to me in an SRV prior to Odyssey, had been exploring a steep hilly crater when I noticed I got too far from my ship so it auto-dismissed. Recalled it, expecting to use it as a long range marker to crawl out of the crater, and noticed it came down right on top of me and just hovered. Took me a minute to realize the srv boarding lights were on, and after some some difficulty lining up due to terrain, managed to take a rather long tractor beam styled ride up into my anaconda.

My working theory with no evidence is that if the ship can't find a good landing spot within auto-dismiss range, it goes into hover mode as a fail safe.

The weird thing is that there was more than enough room for it to land. There was a pretty large flat, open area behind the viewpoint of the camera.

I had initially set the ship down there in that flat area. I only dismissed it because I did an initial low flyover to get a feel for the layout of the base, which attracted every scavenger in the settlement to come greet me as I stepped out of the cockpit.

Yeah it looked like there would have been plenty of room just off screen to the left, but I've noticed calling my ship near settlements to be inconsistent, even more so than in Horizons. Sometimes it will land right beside a building at a larger settlement, but at smaller settlements it lands over 1km away, when there appears to be plenty of open ground I have to jog across to get to the ship.

Like Wonko said, it's be nice to have a separate hover mode "quick-pickup" button as well as the normal landing.

As mentioned before, this happens due to terrain, most often around settlements.

It is consistent though, as long as the settlement doesn't have pads for your ship or all the suitable pads are taken then recalling the ship will cause it to come down at the same spot (exactly on top of where you stand when you recall it).

Sometimes it only works on one side of the settlement and not the other.

I made a suggestion based on this over a year ago: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/use-point-emote-to-designate-a-landing-area.593546/

This was seven years ago - I usually name pictures after the system and planet (it's probably Colonia), but this one's just called "I can't jump that far".

These days I would probably have a few goes at hurling the SRV upwards, but know from further experience that any effort is only likely to be successful in VR; it's very hard steer a flying SRV when guessing the target's location.

Would be useful if the SRV pickup also projected the hologram onto the ground to show the correct boarding position. It's impossible to work out when your ship is 10km above you and you are stuck in a ravine (as I discovered the other day). :D

I thought of that after I saw your post regarding this occurring whilst in your SRV. Trying to line up to board would be extremely difficult.

Yeah, I wish to hell they would add a module that allowed you to deploy physical multicrew or SRVs like this. Would be freaking glorious to have a ship swoop in, drop guys down to the settlement to do the raid and then be able to snatch them up from a hover and go.
