Well what a year it has been for me, 13 months to be closer to the truth, and overall a dreadful one at that. Last June, coinciding perfectly with when things started going wrong, Premium Beta was launched and I jumped in to something I had been anticipating for a long time. A small amount of meat on the bones there was but straight away I knew there would be something different about this game and I realised that even more when I started using the forums more and more.
I rarely spend long on the forums for games I play because more often than not they just descend into bickering, name calling and abuse. Not that I haven't encountered that here, or that there aren't arguments (as "the" thread started today shows) but it is very much a small part of life here. When I got my dad's BBC Micro from him I started a thread and we all had a reminisce and then when it wasn't working properly I got lots of advice on the best way to try to fix it. Incidentally I love the fact that the old BBC manuals actually tell you to use a flat headed screwdriver to prise out the chips from the motherboard
imagine intel telling you to get an i7 out like that! I have had so many, much needed, laughs whilst reading through and taking part in these forums. The first day of the UA thread was truly genius and the thread on the Titan Black hunt was so funny I actually spent more time reading that than I did looking for the items.
I have spent the last month or so out of the game as the Space Madness was getting to me a bit.
But watching some of One Vigor's recent charity stream got me back in, a great example of the spirit here. I had the pleasure of meeting James at the Premier event and dropping him off at his hotel on my way home and that's another striking thing about this game the fact that he in his teens, me in my late 30s and people here who are in their 50s and 60s all enjoy playing this game and find different reasons to love it. I actually had to force myself out of the door that night to go to the premier, as I was finding it harder and harder to bring myself to leave the house, but I am so glad that I did as it was one of the best nights I've had in a very long time.
I met so many amazing people, including the legends of Kerrash and FireyToad, the FGE group among many others and once again the community showed their true spirit. Organised by MikeSnos the community rallied together to not only produce some amazing gifts for the FD team, but also raise an incredible amount of money for charity, something which has continued through MahdDogg and other peoples live streams. Heck and that's not even including the Pizzas and cookies for release days
Then there's the threads here, you know the ones I mean, Nutter's Exploration Guide, Erimus's Galactic Mapping project, Stalker's early guides and handbooks, Ben's Black Market list, the Galactic book of records and the myriad of others that have been created and are still being added to as the months progress. The amount of effort that people put into things here and how welcoming the majority are I personally think is a very special thing.
Sure we argue and get annoyed with each other sometimes, who doesn't, but the thing that has always impressed me the most is that even people who fight like cats and dogs with each other all pull together as soon as someone does or says something that crosses that line we all know exists. Because, I believe, we are all here for the same reason. We want to play an amazing game and do what we can to help that game grow and evolve. We may have differing views, but that's a good thing because if everyone wanted the same thing, it would get very boring very quickly and one thing these forums certainly are not, is boring
That's my long boring chat over with
I just wanted to thank all you guys and girls for helping me over this last year, even though you didn't know you were doing it, it means a lot. I'm sure I'm not the only one and long may it continue.
