My thoughts on E-D

I bought the game two weeks ago. Today Horizons was announced. When I bought the game Reddit (the place I do most of my E-D discussion) was in uproar over the state of Powerplay. This was my exact comment on their complaints:

Yea, game communities turn toxic on their developers really quickly when updates are released that are generally not fun. In a way, the toxicity makes sense:

  • A bad update shows the dev's ideas of fun are not fun, and the outcrying should educate the devs that their ideas of what is fun are wrong.
  • A bad update takes time away from good ideas.

The first point is, by far, the most important. Power Play, apparently, did not come as an idea from the playerbase. That means the responsibility for it being fun or not rests solely on the shoulders of the devs. Convincing the devs that their ideas are not fun and they should listen to you is extremely hard, normally. Believe me, I've been on both sides of the fence. The devs are very prone to saying "Well you, I think it's awesome!" and sticking their head in the sand because they lose sight of what they (should have) set out to do: make something other people find fun, even if they don't.

Where the message gets lost is when the devs implement mechanics they find fun, and not many other people do. That's where you get into a downward spiral until the devs can be convinced their ideas aren't great.

Am I saying Frontier is in a downward spiral? No. I'm talking about past experiences I've been a part of not related to E-D. But, the framework and order of events remains unchanged. It is reasonable to express disgust with bad updates, but you must understand why you are expressing your disgust and communicate your annoyance clearly. If the devs do not respond rationally, then it is time to abandon ship because few things will convince people that thick-headed that they are wrong.

So, given the Horizons announcement, what do I see? I see a game that has been out for less than a year saying "We'll double our game Christmas this year...if you give us $60!". But no one anywhere believes you're actually doubling the content. Why do I say doubling? Because you're charging the same prices as the original game cost. I don't care what you *think* that means, it objectively means you are selling something that is equivalent to a duplicate game.

So what is my request? Stop.making.bad.updates.

You have a great framework for a game. I bought a really solid HOTAS setup because the flight model is so compelling. Bounty hunting in RES is quite fun. The vulture is a great ship. I haven't tried exploring yet and have been waiting for the HTC vive before I do so. Trading will probably be really fun once you get an EVE style supply and demand economy.

I understand you are a company and you need to make money. The problem is that you aren't delivering a value to me and many other people that is worth the price you are asking. I don't care what you think it's worth, it matters what *we* think it's worth. It's the exact same problem as bad updates; your opinion is irrelevant, ours is literally the only one that matters.

This is me asking very nicely for you to realize you are on the wrong road, and fix it. In the mean time, I'll keep flying my vulture and waiting for the Vive to come out. The game itself is actually fun at the most basic level. It needs a LOT of work to be properly fun, but you have a good base. Just...improve upon that.

Perspective here as we can only play 1 role at any given time:
1 in 5 PowerPower
4 in 5 Bounty
1 in 5 Explore
1 in 5 Trade
1 in 50 Pirate
1 in 100 Mine
1 in 1000 PvP
1 is cheating!
In my opinion not based on any fact other than PowerPlay forum votes.

First, don't read Reddit. It's not good for the soul.

Second, who's this "we"?

Third, is content a quantity? If all you want is double the content, they can add another 400 billion stars and there you have it. You don't see planetary landings as a valuable addition? Also, do you actually understand the pricing? Might be annoying to be a late-comer and have an expansion announced right after. But it is not even there yet, there is a long time to Christmas...

Fourth, which of these updates are actually bad? So far they have all contributed to the game. Some to parts I freely admit I'm less interested in than others (not much Powerplay going on 3.5 kylies from Sol), but they are part of the game. Others like them!

Five, I personally don't care what you think the game is worth. And I'm sure FD is happy developing what THEY think is relevant, not what the toy-throwers on Reddit think.

So I'm having properly fun already, will have more fun when PL arrives I'm sure. Don't think you are speaking on my behalf. If you are not having fun, why are you still flying round in your Vulture?

:D S

Kingdud must be a serious gamer for 2weeks into a Vulture. I'm still in my Vulture although I got DBScout & Asp but prefer the bounty play in RES. CZ is way too risky with freezes and random difficulty. There's just no other ship I want to go grinding for right now.

Stop.making.bad.updates.

I'd just like to thank you for saving me the time I would've spent actually playing by letting me know how bad it will be before you've even seen it.

Could you by any chance let me have the lottery numbers too oh fount of all knowledge?

1. Depends where you go. Stay away from cesspits like /r/atheism. /r/dogecoin is quite friendly though. /r/aww is a staple.

2. The collective mass of people who both have and have not bought the game. Those who have not I would generally consider people who've watched a significant number of play through videos to get an idea for how mechanics work, how long flight takes, etc. Case in point, while people think I've only been playing 2 weeks, the fact is I spent 6 months watching videos before I bought the game. I spawned in day 1 already knowing how to fit my ship, what classes meant on modules, how to set power priorities, etc.

3. There are four game mechanics that currently exist in ED: Bounty Hunting, Trading, Mining, and Exploring. That's it. There is no manufacturing. There are 400 billion solar systems and no way to make *any* use, aside from screenshots, of 399.999 billion of them. Don't get me wrong, I love eye candy too, but eye candy isn't worth $60 to me. There's no supply and demand economy, you just find a great route and keep it a secret.

There's no way to colonize anything. There's no way to make use of *any* of the planets or moons you find. Horizons addresses moons, apparently, and that's the only promised feature in the entire season. Power play just added multipliers on top of existing mechanics. Woo. If we could expand to systems outside the existing SOL cluster that would be great...for ADL anyway. :p Arissa followers can't exactly trade in solar systems without stations. :p

4. PP didn't live up to its hype. That's one thing that made it bad. The netcode wasn't fixed in Wings, that's what made it bad. These are petty and subjective, but it turned people off of the game. Personally they don't bother me, but I might as well explain the point of view since I am here trying to speak sense.

5. You're welcome to your opinion, but the game will be short lived indeed because of such short-sightedness. There aren't enough suckers in the world, sadly.

Thank you for being the only person even sorta willing to debate the actual issues.

That said, I'm beginning to see why mistakes were made. Very few people appear interested in worthwhile debate. Short quips and attacks seem the norm. It is impossible to get good feedback from such noise, so perhaps I should give Frontier more credit for doing what they did with the community that exists here.

It's a shame you feel like that, can only speak for myself and the others who I know love this game, but in terms of value I have had mine at least 100 times over since beta. I have sunk more hours into this game than literally any I have ever purchased and am still thoroughly entertained a year later. Planetary landings have been on the cards since day dot and the content path that is to come with Horizons will, yet again, be worth every penny to me.

This on the other hand.. pretty bold words for somebody 2 weeks into the game and with very minor participation on these forums. The game was pretty much molded here to some extent with the DDF and there has been an absolute plethora of detailed debate and discussion on the game, its mechanics and design. Sadly the "noise" as you so eloquently put it is mostly in response to the same tired old threads or recycled topics of conversation which have been discussed in thread after thread over and over again. Or failing that the attitude you might be seeing is from people who have had to listen to the same points of view, expressed as if they are law by certain members new and old. Personal opinion is one thing but nobody speaks for the majority here, regardless of how right you feel you are.
