My thoughts on the game.

I don't know why I write this, I know it's not going to change anything and who the hell am I anyway to say how things should be...
But here I am, going to express my frustration and thoughts about the game.

I've wanted to love Elite Dangerous ever since it's kickstarter.
And I have defended decisions Frontier made.
But the truth is, everytime I tried playing it, I got bored by it pretty quick.
And I've been frustrated by many of the decisions that have been made by Frontier.
Which meant I haven't felt a desire to play for a long time now.
I've tried new updates when they came for a while but I even stopped that when the updates didn't seem to bring anything new I cared about untill I tried Odyssey.

The problem for me personally I think is that there are no goals to work toward.
Sure we can set our own goals, and I have done that.
When I first started I worked toward getting max reputation with the Alliance.
And then I started helping Alliance factions growing and expanding.
But the game gives very little feedback on your effords. And it just feels like your doing randoms stuff for no reason.

Missions feel very random and unrelated to the faction your doing and the reputation you have with them. The actions you take don't feel like they matter.
Maybe that's all one can hope for with such a large procedural world. But I can't help but feel that there should be ways to be able to make missins more meaningful.
And heck, why not just add some good old fashion quest lines with meaningful rewards to aim for. Something that tells the story about the major faction you do the questline for.
I've played NMS lately, and while far from perfect they did have quests I got drawn into. So at the very least it isn't a complete silly idea for a large procedural world.
(Their expeditions are a pretty interesting idea too)

And rewards wise it's pretty boring as well imo, I don't really care to get the biggest ship with the biggest weapons.
What I want to work toward is presonalize my ship visually.
But those kind of rewards are not in the game, you have to buy those, and that's not rewarding.
I get that Frontier likes to monitize on those who love buying stuff. But that limits the posibility for ingame rewards.

It doesn't help that missions are time limited, meaning I can't pick up missins today and finnish them another day.
The game is forcing me to do them now and even punishes me if I fail to complete them in time.
Completing tasks in time feels more like work then enjoying a game. If there are a few missions that are time limited that would be fine. But all of them?!
Ofcouse the game also makes traveling within a system extremely slow, which makes the time issue only worse and also helps to cause boredom faster.
Waiting for my ship to arrive it's destination is not a fun way to play for me.
It would have been much better if normal space and supercruise weren't seperate instances, and if speeds could go much faster then they are now to shorten the travel time.

I had hopped that with the new update, I would find new ways to enjoy the game.
But sadly, I got bored just as quickly with on foot missions as I did with space missions. Mostly because of the same reasons.
I was sad to see that the stations I visited were all looking exactly the same. There really should be a lot more variaty, in fact every station should be unique.

Lastly, as a PVE player, I've always felt left out by Frontier. We are forced to stay in solo or join some private group where pvp is discuraged but still possible.
It would be better if there was a open PVE mode, so that PVE players got the same respect as PVP players.

Ok that was my rant. There are many more things I could say but I think these thing impact the enjoyment the most.

"You can set up your own goals, but rewards are meak for making them, and the game itself doesn't really show any real progress with them" is what i got from the first part of your post. And i really do understand it.
Elite is a gigantic sandbox, in which anyone can set up their own goals, "Trail their own blaze" etc. But outside of:
  • ships progression;
  • equipment progression;
those goals are largely... meaningless. Or rather, they don't feel that great. Sure, i can help a faction grow. But it doesn't change anything...

If this aspect, this part of Elite could change. If the world in the game got more "responsive" to our inputs, it would be really great.
