Newcomer / Intro my thread - ongoing q and a

hi im starting this thread to post questions i may have rather than making several different threads and clogging up the forums.

anyway for my first q. i have a mission to find a kill haulers. will these appears a signal sources that i can drop out of supercruise onto? or will i need an interdiction thingy?

thanks in advance

Go to a NAV in the designated system and find them there.
I'd recommend not doing those missions though, they are quite a hassle.

You'll get WANTED and security forces will be all over you almost instantly.

It's easier interdicting them in SC and taking them down before security forces shows up, but you're going to have quite a large bounty afterwards.
Not enough to cover the reward.

Skip missions that require you to kill civilians, they are usually more hassle than they are worth.
At least until you know how to play the system.

i killed one of them but i didnt get a bounty - probably because it was in an anarchy system?

i had another question are strong unidentified signal sources always players?

i have dropped out of supercruise on these twice and both times it was another player being attacked by a group of other players.

the second time i didnt make it out alive lel

Strong signal sources are random encounters with stronger (or more) enemies. They are normally only populated by NPCs (unless another player follows your wake).

What gave you the impression that there was an other player present? You can identify players by their radar symbols: solid symbol = NPC, hollow symbol = player

im getting tired of this any combat mission i take i just die. now ive had to take out a loan to get my ship back. i need a reliable way to make money any suggestions?

thanks ill do that the sidewinder is terrible for combat imo. am i wrong? would it be worth getting those gimballed kinetic guns for it? they are ~16k credits. i find that the laser one just draws too much power so u cant fire for very long.

Also a few questions.

mining laser - i guess i go to an asteroid belt target a rock and start mining? is this very profitable? are there different yeilds of ore for different asteroids etc.

and ive asked this in another thread but just wanted to check again - is there some kind of trick to finding uss' ive been flying close to the star in a system and in random different directions. leaving it to go straight in one direction for a few mins then change and repeat. but ive not found this damn black box in like 15 mins now...

Mix lasers and kinetic weapons.
Lasers are good for shield and kinetic is good for hull.

And projectile based kinetic weapons doesn't use much power, so you can switch to those while your laser is recharging.

Sidewinder is fine for combat. With some upgrades it holds up pretty well until you can get into an Eagle or Viper. What you upgrade it with is entirely up to your tastes and needs for combat. If lasers are too draining you can try sticking with pulse lasers and upgrading the power distributor.

SOP here is to cut your throttle, which brings you down to 30kms. USS will spawn randomly around you and at that speed they will spawn very close and you'll already be going slow enough to drop out of supercruise.

yes i am cruising at 30kms but no uss in 20 minutes now

ha just after i post that it appeared \o/

I wouldn't do mining, it's not very profitable compared to trading and bounty hunting but it can be fun to try. You'll need a mining laser and refinery module. Go to metalic or metal rich ring around a planet, avoid icy rings, you can't mine there.
And another thing: if you didn't make a good start in game, you can clear your save in menu and start over, better now then later.

thanks for the tip much appreciated.

another q then. i can afford reinforced alloy for my sidey now but should i just wait and get the mil spec armor? following from this looking at the stats the armor reduces my max jump range becuase its heavier.

should i upgrade my fsd first?

edit - aslo . i thought only player could interdict u? i am playing solo atm to get a better ship but i just nearly got interdicted. (luckily i made the escape vector)

Forget about armour this soon, upgrade your shield if you want to be tougher.

Well. Eventually, an armour upgrade is not a bad idea on the Sidey as its armour is stronger than its shields and
I'd personally reinforce what's tougher (and Sidewinder's hull repairs are paid from loose pocketchange) but then again,
what he ^ said. Upgrade your Shield Generators and FSD before bothering with stuff that makes your ship heavier.

yeah i already upgraded the shields a bit. im now wondering if a shield booster would be better than my exploration thingy. how do they work. do u get one charge or something?

i want to do the combat missions that pop up from time to time like the ones that say go to the warzone and kill 7 or 8 combat ships.

i managed to kill 1 once but now everytime i go to the combat zone i just get destroyed so easily. thats why im thinking about the armor upgrade (again ive already upgraded my shields)

A shield booster just adds to your shield. It says how much on them.
And if you're not exploring, you don't need the scanner.

Equip your ship accordingly to what you are doing, there's no penalty for refitting, you can sell modules at same price you bought them.
