I had saved up a bit of cash running assassination missions in my Viper, only around 4 million. So I figured that with all this late evening player hunting I'd had enough practice in effectively disabling their ships without killing them.
So I took the plunge and bought a Cobra, because it has enough mass to disrupt super cruise, is pretty quick, and has space for 32 cargo, a shield generator, fuel scoop, an interdictor and a limpet launcher.
So I went out to my usual hunting grounds in Orrere and started looking for traders. Well here goes my experience.
I caught a couple of cobras, and they immediately ran. Now, standard procedure when dealing with traders (especially cobras) is to destroy their engines, for two reasons:
a) Its faster than killing them.
b) It slows them down for the limpet.
Everything needed to be executed fast before they realize they can just log off, and yes, at least two other players did that when they noticed what I was doing.
My cobra only had two gimballed beam lasers, not very good for combat, but more than enough to fight against their shield cells and sharp shoot their thrusters.
So, on the last cobra I disabled, I launched the limpet, it attached and out came a total of 9 rares. I politely thanked him for the cargo and allowed him to drift on his way.
So after I scooped up the cargo and sold it at the nearby station that he was heading to, because I figured if that was where he was going, that this is where they would sell. I checked out my total profit and expense.
Expense:
- Wear and tear: 13,000
- Repairs from interdiction: about 300
Sales:
- 56,000
Now, although the process in general was quite enjoyable, I do have to question the feasibility of my venture.
The amount of time it took to, find, catch, cripple, rob, scoop, dock and sell; was arguably the least effective career I ever dabbled in.
I guess I could go on to do the same to NPCs, but who knows what aimless cargo they hold, and I would certainly consider it if it wasn't for the lack of a tractor beam.
I am going to say no, to the prospect that piracy has its fair share of profitability and feasibility in this game so far.
I will be selling my cobra and be jumping back into my trusty viper to hunt bounties and carebears
Thanks for reading.
