My twelfth killl.

There's me, still Harmless, eleven kills, and just been melted in seconds by two Fer-de-Lance purely as a result of my curiosity while exploring. Oh, and I'd just spent all my money on a cargo of Palladium knowing full well I'd not have enough to cover the insurance.

[I'd just done something similar in 1.3 beta, all in the spirit of trying out new kit of course...]

I opted to buy back my old loadout, putting me in 160KCr debt. OK, my dumb fault. I knew the risk and I . I'm on the edge of nowhere and thought that exploring and scanning would be a relatively relaxing way of making back my money (and paying off the loan). Normally, in my Type 6 I'll submit to any interdiction and, unless it's for a legitimate scan, I'll boost my way out and possibly end up with a warmed rear depending on how the shields hold out.

This time was different.

After submitting to the interdiction, I found and scanned my NPC captor. Commander Shadowseed: wanted, in a Viper, and ranked Elite. I'm Harmless, in a Type 6, with two gimballed beam lasers (which normally don't even have any pips assigned to them), and nothing in my recently reduced to 80t cargo bay.

I watched the Viper pottering about, wondering why the Commander was toying with me, puzzled why (s)he hadn't already opened fire as is normally the case, and getting very mixed autogenerated comms text. After a minute of pondering whether I should jump away or what was going on, I thought I'd act upon the wanted status and opened fire. Of course, the worst that could happen was that my ship would be fragged, I'd buy my old loadout again, and take things a lot more gingerly... maybe even going back to the grind of trading in human space for a while, until my debt (which would then be close to 500KCr), was paid off.

I have no idea what this Viper was kitted out with, but I was outmaneuvering it, and while he managed to briefly take my shields down once, I was having a whale of a time. My son had invited friends around, and they sat and watched as I gradually took this so-and-so down over around fifteen minutes, handsomely rewarded with 56KCr. I was quite chuffed to see sporadic incoming laser fire sparking away at my shields, and listening to the crackle of my lasers burning into my opponent's craft.

I still can't quite get over it, 24 hours later. Me, in the ED equivalent of a Ford Transit, playing about with power management and flight assist, taking down an Elite Commander (albeit NPC), in a Viper.

I'm still ranked as Harmless, though.

Unless I've misunderstood your post, I suspect what would have actually happened is you'd have been in a Sidewinder with 1000Cr. IIRC there's a max 250k loan amount.

Don't fly uninsured! Too many posts on here about it. :)

The loan limit is 600KCr. Or at least it is for me. Think that's been the case since 1.2.

taking out an Elite Viper with a T-6 ranked Harmless?

Have some rep sir

Thanking you kindly.

Yes, it was a good 15-20 minutes, and the Viper had several chances to recharge shields. However, as I got to learn the evasive tactics it used it was fun flying in reverse, occasionally with flight assist off, listening to the sizzle of laser fire (mine!), and I simply wasn't going to let this one go.

+1 rep, did the boys give you the bumps ? :D

p.s. word of warning, the NPC combat AI has vastly improved in 1.3 :)

Now you know why so many people voraciously bounty hunt or merc. Have you tasted a high intensity combat zone yet?

It sounds like you had enormous fun, there. Fight the power! Also, like all good warlocks, remember:

Then I duly retract the point. Fair play, sir. *doffs hat*

Fortunately I've not needed it as yet!

When you typically get half an hour to play three or four times a week, you don't get a great deal of time to practice combat skills... Flying, trading, or scan a couple of systems and jump back to human space to park until next time.

This week I've had some time off, so been spending up to seven hours a day playing... Done more in the last week (in game), than I have all year to date. Learning when *not* to shoot, the need for power management mid-combat, and that strong signal sources are best avoided when you're ill-equipped.

And as for the "as yet!", I wish my shielding was as stubborn as your optimism ;)

I was expecting you to finish the story with:

Then I turned to the kids and asked them "Are you not entertained?!"

Nice story, yeah pretty much what everyone else said. Nice and watch out for the NPC boost in 1.3

I'm looking forward to it, especially as I was just interdicted in Durok by a Sidewinder and an Eagle, both wanted... and they ran.

Actually, the kids were more amused with telling jokes to each other :( You can't win every battle, eh? ;)
