So this is a quick ramble following the break imposed upon me from the release of 5.0.1 Runtime - with this release, it simply stopped the DK2 from working.
I also received my new VR Face cover at roughly the same time, so I was pretty miffed I couldn't even try it.
After many posts at the Oculus VF forums and some really welcome help from Cyber and Cleak there, I still could NOT get the damn thing working......
.............and, in a sad way, I sort of fell out of love with my DK2.
Work went mental and I found little or no time to spend on the pooter, other than to create presentations, documents and spreadsheets (all work related). Thrown into the mix as well, was my 22 year year old daughter buiying her first house and moving into that, which needed some decorating etc.
So it was only last week, I tried to sort out the Rift and get the latest runtime working. I had (I believed) eradicated any hardware issues and come to the dreaded conclusion it had to be software / drivers / "crud on my pooter" related. After many attempts to try and get it working, I decided on a system HD format - the dreaded format C: !!
During the weekend before last, I got Windows 7 reinstalled and a whole host of other stuff - got my wheel, pedals, HOTAS etc all reinstalled and then, with baited breath, plugged in the DK2 and installed the drivers.
Pushed the button on the HMD, which I had done for so many times recently, and the config util showed the Rift was there! Woohoo!
Reinstalled various software and games (including ED) and each time checking the DK2 was there and THEN creating a restore point.
Glad to say that the weekend just gone, was the first time I had played ED for a number of weeks - and I tell you - had I missed this experience? You bet ya.
Got all the graphics sorted, as well as Sweet FX, Green GUI, X55 HOTAS set(back)up and I was back in space.
The experience still beggars belief.....still leaves me gazing, open mouthed, WHATEVER I am doing; docking, fighting, exploring, orbiting......
The VRFace addition is stunningly effective - so much better than the VR Cover - by a long way. I felt no discomfort on my cheeks (where I had felt it previously with the VR Cover) and flew around for a number of hours.
Glad to be back in the seat, in space and in my loverly Asp...
See you out there
Nosh.
