greetings commanders and HELLAU from Mainz (ger)

This thread is all I need right now. Ive just spent big on OR and 1080 and now, more temptation. I note OP's clever use of a small space and the use of extrusions I have access to. I need to stay away from these threads before my visa throttles me.

Having entered the world of virtual reality last summer I decided to design and construct my own sim rig as I could not find anything commercially available that had all the features I wanted. The video documents how I set everything up, including my PC build and Rift sensor placement.

I designed my system for flexibility and comfort. It can be used for both racing games and flight sims. The seat frame can be adjusted forwards and backwards so when I am not using the steering wheel and pedals, I can move the seat back over 30 cm which allows me to stretch my legs while still having access to the HOTAS, mouse and gamepad. I included this mobility specifically with Elite Dangerous in mind to avoid feeling cramped during long play sessions.

Playing Elite in this rig is joy and the bass shaker really enhances the experience. I hope it inspires others to do the same. It was well worth time and effort I spent building it!

That looks outstanding - what would be the chances of you posting the design sizes, breakdown etc - for us none technical building type Dudes to maybe use to also order the same stuff :)

Hopefully
Eric

Very nice. I'm toying with idea idea of turning my garage into a sort of holodeck and something like you have made would be great if I do it. What is the frame made of, I can't remember the name of that stuff? I really like the idea of replicating the seating position in ED and adding a buttkicker (or bass shaker) into the mix.

Took me a while to spot where the PC was... very nice touch!

Me too! Buying a house and my wife said I can convert the garage. Need some inspiration so if you fancy sharing ideas message me. The OP has done a wonderful job there and that's given me some inspiration already. I came across some galaxy ceiling murals the other day, worth checking those out if you google them.

I am appalled that someone could consider 'converting' a perfectly useful garage. Garages are wonderful places full of bikes, tools, the smell of wd40, oil and lubricants. Careful. Before you know it the washing machine, tumble drier, kids bikes and other detritus will be in there. I need to take a lie down. I am shocked.

Haha I don't do tools or car maintenance, it's got a pitched roof as it used to double up as the showroom so I reckon I can get an updstairs out of it too - down stairs guitar room, upstairs game room

You could keep it like this:

Or you could have this:

(Well it should be, but it's the internet so who knows for real)

I have posted this other places as well, but this is mine.

Banged it together after geting ED and using my Hotas on the desk was throwing out my shoulder, so I would have to either stop playing. [ugh]

Or do something.

I consider it my first draft without much planning, if any.
I had the basic U shape in my head, but that was about it.

The desktop side is becoming rather cumbersome, and having gone VR I don't really need to see the screen, or at least not the big screen.

So I have been long thinking something along the lines of OP.

And befoure you ask, no I haven't even tried to hide the cables.

I have the Warthog and the MFG Crosswind pedals. Once you try these together (they're both top tier), it's very hard to envision going back. I use a Playseat Air Force pulled up to a desk. My HOTAS is connected to my chair and all other peripherals (wheel, gearshift, yoke, keyboard, mouse, etc...) are on the desk (usually not all at once). Perfect placement of HOTAS to match in-game avatar. I would love a quicker way to switch between car pedals and rudder pedals though.

Hi commanders,
Here's my newly finished motion sim pilots chair. 50hrs flying time so far and in VR really brings ED to life. I'm gonna add a vid of it in motion in my own post.

Nice, there is nothing more satisfying than making your own sim setup. Here is mine, which, as it progressed, got a little out of control re-lighting :ROFLMAO:

Oh yes, I made the chair also...after ‘borrowing’ the middle section of our settee. (y)
