My Weekend PvE Piracy Experiment

A few months ago I found a system on the edge of the bubble with fairly good passenger missions. I stuck around and eventually it started to feel like a "home" system. I was allied with the two emperial factions and (slowly) working on my rank, even after the pax were nerfed. One day the criminal faction in the system started a civil war, and I had the most fun I've ever had in a CZ because I felt like I had skin in the game - I was helping my friends out.

About a month ago, a system a few light years away became a control system for aisling duval. My system suddenly started getting a lot of traffic (though none of it in open) apparently from people who are really focused on powerplay. They boosted the communist faction because that gives aisling more CC, and although I fought against them, they won three civil wars and took the system.

I was kind of "meh" about this because I was ready to move some place new anyway - needed to start grinding fed rank. But it bothered me a bit to leave all those (virtual) people to their fate and just take off. So I decided to do something about it.

At first, I just started attacking the commie ships. That turned out to be too easy and boring. Over the weekend, I switched to PvE piracy.

But I wanted to make it somewhat challenging, so I limited myself to a Cobra with only minimal engineering (G3DD, heavy armor, and thermal-resist shields). I also reduced by bank account balance to a nice round number so that I could easily keep track of if I was making or losing money.

It turns out, piracy under these circumstances is not as easy as I thought it would be. The system was in lockdown now, and I had a hostile rating with the communists - so they opened fire on me immediately, no scan necessary. System security forces take about 10 seconds to show up, and my little Cobra can't sit still gathering cargo while they shoot at me.

I died twice before learning that I have to be really, really cautious. It's better to leave with nothing than to leave with cargo that doesn't cover your repair bill - or get an insurance bill that takes a long time to pay off.

I found that I don't have time to try and disable a freighter - take out his drives and steal all his stuff. I don't really even have time to waste on a cargo scan. It's better to just fire off a hatch breaker and see what comes out. I also have to just go ahead and kill the freighters so that they aren't shooting at me too. So I get them down around 1% and then as soon as the hatch breaker is done, I finish them.

Now there's cargo spread over several kms of space. I have a collecter out of course, but they're idiots that like to pick up biowaste, so I manually scoop whatever is most valuable - two or three canisters at most, then it's time to run.

I also tried encouraging freighters to high-wake and following them, but believe it or not, security shows up so fast that I'm getting pummeled before I can scan their wake. Better to just attack them right away.

I tried hanging around the station and following some outbound freighters. Bad idea. Way too much security. I had some success at a surface base. I sat on the ground several kms away and I could visually see when a freighter was leaving. Then I'd just boost up to scan his wake. The trouble here is that roving security condas "just so happen" to fly right over me and they always see me. So I can only stay in one place for a few minutes.

And I went to a RES. My thought was that I could wait on the outskirts until the NPC security was fighting NPC pirates. Then I could zoom in and hatch break a miner. Didn't work though. Even tried staying in silent running. The security sees me from a long way away, and if I turn to fight an eagle, that allows the condas to join in.

The only place I'm safe is in super cruise. NPCs cannot (currently) win an interdiction vs. a cobra. I get interdicted all the time though, and it's very frustrating when I see a juicy target, but I know I'm about to get interdicted myself.

In the end, between repairs and insurance bills, I only just managed to make a small profit. I think this screenshot shows the best haul I had - I had started this experiment with 200 million, so this is the point where I broke even.

the HIP Organophosphates are from two different T7s. The game spawns the same NPCs over and over, so after a while, you can start to guess what someone is carrying.

Yeah PvE piracy has never been in a great state, its loads of fun but the payouts have generally been very low for the effort. There has been one way to make decent cash with low temperature diamonds but the the patch tomorrow will add more yay! The main thing is choosing where to pirate, sounds like your system had far too high security so was going to be a poor deal from the outset.

Like Robbing megaships.

And specially created "High value piracy targets" which are things like "Private courier service" or "Military Courier service"

They were in the beta.

The megaships will probly need a bit of balancing to get right, but the high value targets had some pretty nice stuff in them. Even if you only grabbed a few items of it (in say, a cobra) it'd be worth it. And for larger ships, you can grab more, and it will still be worth it, because the items are high value.

That means it essentially self scales due to how powerful your ship is, meaning it can last longer and gain more.

+1 Rep Cmdr. Nice back story to your Piracy adventure. You have pretty much hit the nail on the head with regards the issues surrounding PvE Piracy. It's currently very much dependent on a few things including, system state and security level. You also have to learn to be a nomad. Sticking around for any length of time is never a good thing.

You also encountered the steep learning curve and were obviously clever enough to try different methods. Although you have only just broken even this does mean you have officially "made it" as a Space Pirate and can now happily look down on the lesser pilots who stick to the more vanilla careers.

I suggest you burn any emotional attachments you had with your old home and treat yourself to a full load of diamonds.

It is a shame that the Powerplay groups rolled over you in Solo or Private. If only there was a way to legitimately defend against them.

As for the changes to the C&P system. Things will be different but only until the complaining becomes too much. For a lone wolf raider in a Cobra like yourself the new targets might be out of reach but it doesn't stop you trying.

I would also suggest you swing by a trade CG and put your new skills to use pulling a couple of Commanders over. It's lots of fun and doesn't always end badly for someone.

Yaarrrr Cmdr!

I don't know if I'll be able to do it. I'd like to see a video of someone trying it. The shields drop really fast when multiple ships start shooting you and you have to fly slow and straight to pick up a canister.

If I had a wingmate then maybe one person could distract the escorts while the other snatches the cargo.

Yeah, I had the elite equivalent of the 5 stars in GTA.

At least I didn't have ATR after me. Will even being a nomad save you once ATR is in the game? Will they follow you into an anarchy system?

Consindering some of these high value targets are Type 7's... Nope, that's a totally legit target for a lone wolf cobra mark 3 pilot.

I'll try make a video of me pirating one of these things once the patch goes live. I'm fairly confident I can manage it.

I often don't even use shields, preferring to be in silent running as much as possible, in order for the incoming security to take longer to find and begin scanning me.

Once they have found you, it's easy enough to stay away from the scans, but, really, really hard to scoop any more cargo while avoiding those scans, so you are fairly screwed at that point.

I have managed to scoop one or two canisters after I was spotted by the cops though, but it is really, really hard to pull off.

In case youi don't know though, you can target a specific canister, then fire a collector limpet, this sends it off in fast collection mode, and grabs that one bit of cargo, and brings it back to you conisderably quicker than when it's trying to scoop everything. However, it will self destruct after collecting that one piece of cargo. Still extremely useful though.

However, if the security faction just hate you, and dont need to scan... yeah, that's time to move onto a new system right there.

Great story. This is more or less what happens to me when I take "liberate hostages or cargo" missions. Hard as hell in a small ship, quite hard in a bigger ship, since it's easy to blow up the mark...

Also, out of curiosity, what are your HUD color values?

Man this sounds like a lot of fun! I'd love to join you!

I also wanna try some PvE piracy and just bought/engineered a manifest scanner. I plan to use hatch breaker limpet controller b/c saw Isinona's video using it without miner's notice or retaliation as opposed to shooting their cargo hatch.

Is there a significant different using between a 1A or 3A limpet controller?

1A can fire one limpet max, and takes more time to hack the hatch.

3A can fire two limpets at the same time (kind of pointless really, has tiny niche use) and hacks the hatch faster. Also has longer range than 1A before it explodes due to lack of computer control.

I see, thanks. So firing 2 limpets will not break hatch faster?

1A is only 2 secs slower than 3A but uses 0.14 less power and mass is 3.7 smaller ;) Range is 280 m less ... meh.

Yeah, 1A is fine for a small ship, if you have a spare Size 3 slot on a larger one, may as well get the bit of extra speed, but there's not really that much in it.

I actually kinda find that good, because it means 1A's are perfectly adequate, meaning you don't feel like you need to use a large slot to pirate.

what are your HUD color values?

<MatrixRed> 1, 0.25, 0 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> 0, 1, 0 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 0, 0, 1 </MatrixBlue>

Supposedly, it makes the text a bit more readable in VR. I can't really tell to be honest.

1A can fire one limpet max, and takes more time to hack the hatch.

There's also a stat for min and max cargo dropped. It isn't shown in coriolis but is shown in the game. The class 3 supposedly gets at least 3 canisters. The class 1 only gets one canister minimum.

3A can fire two limpets at the same time (kind of pointless really, has tiny niche use)

Just to clarify why it's pointless: you can only have one hatch breaker limpet attached to a ship at a given time. If you fire a second one, it just waits its turn.

At first, I ran with a class 1 hatch breaker and a class 3 collector. That way I could have two collectors active. I found the collectors to be mostly useless. There just isn't time to wait for them, and they have no concept of how to prioritize their targets. Most of what I got, I scooped myself.

I switched to the class 3 breaker so that the cargo would start dropping faster. I would still launch a single collector from the class 1 controller, but mostly I had to manually scoop.
