Mysterious Stranger "Tip Off" Mission

I've gotten a few of them in the past but never bothered. Well, last night, I got one and thought, why not? It was a crash site and I was told that the the "ship data point" was the real reward. So I got out there and found the ship easily enough, despite it being on the dark side of the body at the moment. I've been in the game for two plus years and had never seen a crashed Eagle...so that was cool....and Eeee-murrrrrrh-sive, right? Got some fab-o screenies, to boot!

I notice there are a few canisters lying about...explosives, fruit and veg, and palladium. Mostly rubbish, I think, but the Mysterious Stranger said the data core was the real treasure. So I head forward and scan it......and.....got a mayday message.....and.....that's it. Nothing else.

Am I missing something?

Next time you dock at a station, check the contacts and you'll have a shipwreck intel package to turn in for cash.

Some of the tip off site logs hint at some neat story stuff, others are unfortunately dead ends. For instance, there was one with a log saying that the ship was trash but the SRV was still functional, so they were gonna take their chances and head out down the valley, hopefully find an outpost or a settlement. I had a look down the valley, saw a contact on the wave scanner, followed it, and eventually found an SRV buried in a rockslide.

There was another one with a crashed DBX, the black box was at the crash site and the ship's data core mentioned that they knew they were going down, and all six of them took to the escape pods before it crashed. Sadly, after spending a good while scouting around on the planet in a rough line behind the ship, both from the SRV and from the air, I found no sign of any pods. A few canisters of expensive metals, but no escape pods.

No intel data packages in your transaction panel? That's where I'd expect this "data core" to be. Kinda odd if it's not

Not a thing. That's what I was expecting, as well...similar to scanning a comms tower in a settlement. But I got nothing...just a message. EDDiscovery just relays it as "Data Scanned: Wrecked Ship."

Ah....right on. OK, like the Formidine Rift intel data? Got it...rep for you, CMDR!

I did one of these tonite and aside from some canisters with nothing really valuable aside from a little silver, the data core netted me 1.9mil when I eventually returned to station.

Was a very cool sight though and a nice break from trading to fly across the landscape looking for the site!

Yeah, once I got my OHS in sync, I saw the data packet in my transaction tab. Netted me almost 2 mil for a unique and fun 20 minute distraction. I think I'll be doing more of them.

I did this mission once too. Then met on the planet another CMDR who got the same tip off. Same message, same coordinates. So we searched the site for data like two imbeciles together, and I added him on my friendlist and he added me too. Then we played a bit on a CZ. Then he stopped playing and my heart was a bit broken.

So maybe this mission is a tip from a mysterious stranger, or maybe it's the arrow of brocupid for you to start a new bromance, or maybe it's just a bug. Or maybe there is a deeper meaning to all of it, like those mass produced chinese fortune cookies, except this one is way past peremption date, but you still eat it, but then you get sick, and then you miss your plane, but the plane crash and you're alive.

Holy Braben, no one knows.

It will be soon a year since I stopped receiving invitations to perform missions from the Mysterious Stranger. Why did this happened? How to get invitations from this Stranger again?

Re necromancy: User profile pic checks out.

Re question: I just got a tip off the other day that led me to a crashed ship with a scannable data core. No idea if this was triggered by anything I did though.

I’ve consistently had Tip Off messages after doing Destroy Megaship Turret missions, usually from the ones offering more than one + Influence points.
