N00b explorer keeps getting ganked hard

What I'd do is: go for the DBX and the additional money for a good explorers outfitting + insurance (NEVER fly without enough money to cover at least one insurance-bill).

I would say two insurance re-buys at least. Three is better.

I started an alt CMDR a few weeks ago and needed to decide between the minimalistic versions of

From my understanding/experience they both are equally well suited for first strides outside the bubble (I chose the Hauler due to the lower cost). Sure, an Advanced Discovery Scanner, some shield boosting and an AFMU would be nice, but I actually enjoyed exploring with only the basics - and have been having just as much fun as with my 'perfectly' outfitted Asp out at BP.

Enjoy doing stuff while saving up to sth you're excited about! Let us know what you went with and how your travels out there went.

PS: And yeah, avoid anything that adds unnecessary risks (like any signal sources or picking *any* cargo up).

The Viper Mk IV actually makes a fair explorer. The internals are basically identical to the Cobra Mk III. It's a little heavier, slower, and less maneuverable than the Cobra, and you lose about .75 light years on it due to the heavier hull, but it has significantly more armor and slightly better shields. I would personally have no qualms taking an explorer-fitted Viper anywhere.

Eisen and SMcA are absolutely right that you should make sure you have enough for at least one insurance re-buy before you fly a ship, but assuming you have that and you're happy with the Viper, fly the hell out of it!

P.S.: Since you're new and low on cash, and you've got a bit of a combat bent, here's one thing I'd suggest in order to make some initial cash: Upgrade the power distributor in your Sidewinder to an A-rated one. It's only 20k for the Sidewinder, and it makes your ship *far* better for combat. Go to a resource extraction site and wait for some feds to attack a large wanted ship, then come in to get on the kill. A little time doing this and you'll have money for basic upgrades and insurance.

Good advice, the power distributor is the first thing I upgrade. There is no point in having tons of power if your power distributor can't put it where you need it.
And don't be a hero. Running away is good tactics.

A lot of good advise here to chew over.

Ship choice & outfittings are a personal choice, so choose what suits you - experiment of course but the end choice is yours.

Never mix Exploration & pewpew. You go out Exploring then come back & sell all of your data, then you go out & do your pewpew stuff.
That way you keep whatever systems you've been in if you are unlucky enough to be killed later.

My advise is dont do USSs when packing large amounts of data & only do Threat lvl 0's with small amounts. Keep you're data safe.

Set yourself up with a 'Home Base' somewhere that's right on the edge of civvy space with a station that's less than 100 LSs from the main star. Become Allied with every faction in that system.
This will minimise the chances of 'nasty' incident's when returning home with that precious data.

Pay attention to the government of system when you do this. Being allied with the ruling faction of an Anarchic system doesn't reduce the risk of nasty incidents. Look for something with a strong central government

Hi all,

Real thanks for all your advice I feel I am now on the right path.

I rigged up the Sidey for exploration only, so just basic shields and all D class parts for max jump. B grade FSD. Hitting about 16LY I believe.

Managed to get approx 400LY out of the bubble and have started discovering previously undiscovered stuff, which is awesome.

Hoping that if I fully scan like 20 brand new systems I will have enough for the DBX and then the real journey begins.

If not I will invest everything in the Viper and enjoy some good old fashioned pew pew ;D!

I have actually booked Monday off next week, and intend on having an uber exploration session so if anyone fancies meeting up and forming a temp wing that would be sick.

I guess whilst I have so much experience replying - do any of you guys use any of the third party tools, like the EDDM and apps that hook into the database?

I am quite intrigued by this one.

Thanks again for all of your thoughts you have all been a great help!

I recommend using ED Discovery or Captain's Log to track your journey. EDD gives you nice maps, CL can be used to record extra system details, you can use both...

Don't forget EDSM. I use that to keep EDD in sync with my own MySQL database. I have the MySQL database 'cos I play on Mac and PC and there was no EDD for Mac until recently.

Good point, EDSM is a useful offsite back up for your data as well as a cool collaborative project in and of itself.

EDD will update it for you if set up right, and I think I read a post from Genar that CL will do too in some future update.
