Newcomer / Intro n00b here

hey all. im new at the game here still and still learning. so far ive only played around with controlling using the mouse and keyboard. would anyone here on forum recomend using a gamepad to play the game instead of the mouse and KB?

Never used a gamepad , I use extreme pro joystick which is excellent easy to set up and cheap .... am considering buying a pad to use along side it.... Welcome and good luck cmdr )

Personally I use a keyboard on left and a Logitech Attack 3 on right. I would recommend using a joystick for flying in any game because at least in my opinion it just feels much more natural and it makes more sense.

Just like Paul1828 though I haven't even tried a Gamepad. But anyways, just use whatever feels most comfortable for you.

Absolutely! Although some are comfortable with mouse and keys, a gamepad (or flight stick) generally make a BIG difference for most players.

The Microsoft XBox360 gamepad for PC gets a lot of endorsement here- even by David Braben himself.

Flight stick control choices are more debatable. The best advice I received when starting was to get a stick with throttle control. I did, was very grateful for that advice, and so am passing that along.

I was able to pick up a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro for only 30 USD. It worked flawlessly for me at first. Over the past month, the secondary fire button (the ergonomically shaped thumb button placed in the left side of the stick) has developed an intermittent problem. Because it is designed to be flush with the surface of the stick itself, it sometimes gets stuck. Had they allowed the button to slightly protrude from its housing, I think they could have avoided this problem.

Many players recommend sticks that are quite expensive. If you're in it for the long haul- especially if flight sims are your thing- perhaps that would be a smart choice.

There is a long thread dedicated to these issues here.

Good luck!

A gamepad doesn't feel natural for me having used a joystick for a while. I find it really hard to get my head round having yaw on a separate joystick. Your mileage may vary.

I've been using my X-360 Gamepad with no issue. Although I do have an X-52 as well. Just felt like the small formfactor for a change so I can lean back and lounge between long hops.

I've been playing with mouse and keyboard since the beginning and I prefer it over the three joysticks I did try... I am now in an Anaconda and I'm still using mouse and keyboard. Sometimes the old control methods are often the best.

xbox 360 controller user here. For me the choice was natural, as i simply don't have a lot of room (playing on my notebook that is placed on my lap). Took me a while to configure it to my needs. Now it's almost perfect. But of course i am still a bad pilot, but that's just me :)
