Name a Star

Not sure if this has been suggested before, I am aware of the various purchases that can be made through the Elite Store, but I think Frontier may be missing a trick. Recently my father passed away and we did the Name a Star thing, which involves sending money to an organisation that provides you with a certificate to say the name you have submitted has been added to the Intergalactic Star Database. Now I know this means nothing and the star is not renamed, all you are paying for is a piece of paper, but it is a nice gesture, I thought I would try and visit the star in ED, however I was not able to find it, there doesnt seem to be a way of tying the ED star database to the one used by the 'Name a Star' company.

So I thought it would be cool if rather than buy a dashboard bobble man, or new ship paint job that you could buy a star name in ED.

A star would be great, it could be done as there are so many stars that have these weird names and in some sectors they all seem to have the same, quite anoying.
Maybe ports or planets could be named, instead of "blabla A1-4" it could bring in big $$ or ££.
I guess there is alot nobody ever thought about, and i hope this is going to bring alot of ideas.
Maybe the "cemetary sector"" and cemetary gates where you could look around in a ring around a planet, where there are thousends of rocks with a nameplate or something to scan.

I certainly wouldn’t mind shelling out a few bucks, to me it would be better value anyway. There are so many stars as you say with just letters and numbers, would make it a bit more interesting when exploring deep space if you came across say an Andrew’s Star. You could even pay to have a small blurb which could appear when you go into the local map view. I would be happy to buy one at the other side of the galaxy where no one is ever likely to go, one you got confirmation that it had been named you could go on a pilgrimage to visit it.

I think they should keep it at £3000. Because those people earn the right to name a System.

I wasn't being serious... it's the £1,200,000,000,000,000 that he get if he sold them all... :p

An no, I have no problem kickstarter star naming cost... it helped get me the game I/We all enjoy.

The issue becomes they made people pay £3000 to name a star, then this would suddenly started allowing anyone to name a star and some sort of minor cost is pretty much a major slap in the "Exclusive Item" clause's face considering what they paid for it.

I can see them selling a star name for £3250 so those that bought early to make the game work at all still get a bonus, but allows others to have it as well.

Everyone's mileage will vary on this.
Some are super-sticklers that the original KS can never be under-cut in price for similar thing.
Others think enough time has passed and the game is aging that who cares?
Is there a "right" answer? I don't think so. Just opinions.
Like the DDF was no contract. Who is still bringing up the DDF?

I think to name a star the player should have to be the one that first "discovers" or scans it in-system, then has an option to pay to name it (micro-transaction). Then a lower price includes the work required to go exploring a certain distance from the bubble.

Kickstarter is long over. I have put ridiculous money into the game, including 2 LTE passes. I have no problem if FD wants to let players name more stuff at lower prices than Kickstarter- but some sort of scaled pricing would definitely be reasonable and expected. 3,000 pounds is a lot of ching for a vanity cosmetic item in a running game. I doubt more than a few would shell out for that, if any.

FD previously raised the possibility, for example, of players being able to buy obelisks with a short name or message to place on planets or maybe as tourist beacons. There is so much land area in the galaxy I also think that is no problem at all.

But also think all micro-transaction money needs to start going back into ED and use the 2 park-building games to fund the other new titles. ED needs to get back some more of the love it gave to FD. I'm well aware of the mythical man-month but think the team of "100+" working on ED needs to be 100 coders, engine enhancers, artists and asset builders, and exclude the marketing, community, QA, etc.

Good points Hydrino, I did think about the having to go and find an unexplored system, scan it and return to the bubble in order to pay and name the Star. I think though that to pay for a star to be named and then be provided with the coordinates would add to the whole experience a bit better. Bought stars should be several hundred jumps away, you could be given a choice as to which part of the galaxy there were in, maybe closer ones being more expensive. For me the thrill would be to kit up and set out to find the Star, once there I would be scanning everything in the system, if there were planets with no atmospheres these too would be getting explored to the max.

The whole “name a Star” certificate thing outside of ED costs between £10 to £30. I would happily pay this and would feel it was better value than the certificate system.

Note there needs to be a SERIOUSLY big disclaimer this is not authorized actual naming of a star... There is a actual agency that legally does that for the international astronomy, and they are known to be VERY VERY picky on how things are named. They have sued and won against naming a star events, and they hate people trying to steal their job, even if it is for a game. We are talking the same group that sued NASA and won. So knowing that in advance, as soon as you start 'name a star' expect them to cause legal problems.

Mind you, I didn't pay for a star way back in Kickstart, but I'm reasonably certain that £3k for that privileged is high enough to reasonable expect it to STAY exclusive (That would be my rent for 6 months)

They still do things just like this. They have just reserved them for special occasions.
During large community charity live streams and at community events FD always donate raffle/auction prizes. These include the naming of stars, planets, systems, plant jobs etc.
So tune in and bid or buy a raffle ticket and you could soon name something in ED.
I won name a planet 18 months ago during their live charity stream! :)
