Name plate confusion

HI am very confused by the name plates, do i type my ship name the text field, what a practical name as opposed to a trader etc. And for boundary plates i guess from the store description are self populating?

You have two text fields; the ship's name and the ship's ID tag.
Both can be changed to anything you want from the "livery" options.
The name can be up to 22 characters and the ID tag up to 6 characters.

So, for example, you might call your ship "Humpster's Hornet" so that'd be typed into the "ship name" slot.
You might then decide to give it the ID tag "HS-057" which'd be typed into the "ship ID" slot.

Bear in mind that the ship name is what other people will see when they scan your ship. Not the ID tag.

Then we come to the issue of actually getting that stuff painted on the side of your ship.
There are currently 6 (?) different "nameplate" decals, which will allow you to display the ship's name on the side of a ship.
There is also the "Boundary" decal kit which is ONLY capable of displaying a ship's ID tag. Not the name.

So, if you just want to display your ship's name, buy one (or more) of the 6 nameplate decals.
If you want to display the name AND the ID tag, you'll need to buy one of the 6 nameplate decals AND the "Boundary" decal.

Once you buy a decal, you can use it on as many different ships as you own.

If you buy a nameplate set in the store, it's yours. You can use it on all your ships. And, of course, you can name your ships the same name, if you want.

The 9 decals in a pack are re-useable templates. Think of it like a pack of stencils. You could use any one of the 9 stencils to paint a name on all 5 of your ships if you fancy (or you might prefer to use different stencils on different ships).
