Name standards in the Elite setting?

The so called names that make me cringe are those that employ non-alphabetical characters like numbers (L33T springs to mind as an example). Or the annoying usage of * or < or such like to bracket the name. <<L33T>>

I know, Iknow. I'm being a snob about it, so sue me. :p

Oh dear. I think I struck a nerve with someone. :D I got negative rep a far from flattering comment. *Sends hugs*

On the support site of ED, there are some indications for the restrictions

It doesn't appear to mention anything about names from outside lore or universes, i.e. Star Wars, BSG, Halo, etc.

Anyone think those sort of names will be a problem?

My in-game name is Commander Tetra, I know the name from the pirate girl in Legend of Zelda but the name is obscure that it's not really specific to LoZ.

Anything goes

If people already have names like "Batman Bin Suparman" today on this planet, what names will they have in 1300 years all over the galaxy? I think anything goes.

Now why did my parents call me Old Boar? I should sue them!

In terms of naming conventions, I like to think that we could go the Battletech route here - for example, one person having an English first name and a Japanese surname, or another having a French first name and a Russian surname. Mankind's expansion across the stars is bound to lead to a much greater mix of people among smaller communities, and an accompanying mix of family names.

If you need some good ideas, I recommend this:

That beind said, it is of course not impossible that certain naming fashions have come into being. Just look at the Empire of Achenar, whose people's need to feel special was so great, they made up a whole new dialect. ;)

But other than that? The Federation is populated by all sorts of people from old Earth, and the Independent colonies are bound to host anything from homogeneous xenophobic space fascists, to free-spirited cultural melting pots, to corporate installations that come up with their very own style of society. All could influence the names people choose for their offspring.

I do not think because I have seen on the forums the Commander Skywalker
Indeed.

Personally, I have to say a player who is obviously "stealing" a major name from a different canon would taint my perception of them. Apparently I am not alone, although I would not go as far as to shoot them down for no other reason. :D

Ah, well all of that makes sense. I wasn't planning on anything as obvious as "Skywalker", as I too would be concerned that it would make me a target/trophy kill.

But keeping it obscure enough should keep me relatively safe from you crazies!

Oh yeah. Personally, I don't believe there's anything wrong with a distant reference - names are names, after all! As long as they do not harm people's immersion by evoking an obvious connection to a different setting.

My own name is not entirely original either, just so obscure that few people would get it. And even then it is merely a new combination of names that, by themselves, are entirely natural. :D

Caylo: referencing Sasha Caylo, a character from Titan Maximum
Tavira: referencing Leonia Tavira, a space pirate from a Star Wars novel

The combination is itself another reference to a character I played in a German Star Wars RPG; I merely "recycled" the name as the personality I have in mind would be similar, and because I did not get to play the original character a lot. As I often require days or weeks to decide upon a name I like, this seemed like an attractive shortcut. ;)
