Named NPC or a player?

All players have names distinguished with a CMDR prefix. Their sensor icons are also hollow, not filled in.

If you look at the bandwidth meter (ctrl + B), and it's consistently over 200, chances are there is a player in your instance.

Humph, I knew the other basics, but I never knew about a bandwidth meter. Thanks!

At times I wish there wasn't a way to distinguish PCs and NPCs from each other, except with trial-and-error method.

I'd agree with that, but to do that you'd need a better Comms engine, as at the moment the only way you can talk to anyone is when you see a CMDR's hollow symbol in your instance.

You used to be able to talk to NPCs the same way, they just never answered back...
