Names. Do you change them? How do you pick them? And the benefits on changing.

Now I thought this would be a fun topic and one that I somewhat don't see happening (at least in franchise mode) changing the animals name.
I go thru theme's at times. Like for my flamingo's I do food/fruits. Strawberry, Bubblegum, Hamm, Tater, etc. Other theme's I went with are Star Wars and Shakespeare.
Now I am glad that (in franchise mode) that they do have a algorithm for non appropriate names. But some I had problems with to go thru the animal market are head scratchers.
For instance. I notice a default animal name is Zayne. I rename a animal Zane. Zane was not appropriate. One of my flamingo's gene stat size was 0, so I named him Button. That was not appropriate. I named one of my gorilla's Horatio (part of my Shakespeare theme) that was not appropriate. I was a sad panda. :(
Benefits? Well I did come across one. I put one of my panda's female offspring up on market once they matured at the recommended CC price. I noticed mt panda mother is at that age to rehome and the father is still young. The offspring sold so I went to the market. Sure enough that offspring was there at triple the price. How do I know it was mine? The strange name.

A benefit for sandbox large zoo's is if you want to keep tabs on a couple of your top gold animal's renaming them is the best bet. Seeing their re-names in the notifications would be more noticed than the other default names.

I also have the feeling that funny names boost sales a little. This is what I like to call my best gorillas

  • Greasy Strangler
  • Cohen - The Barber
  • Munchkin Bob
  • Snowflake Destroyer of Humankind

Or my giraffes:

  • Longneck Betty
  • Pointy MacPointy
  • Sleazy Adam

I often spontaneously think of any film reference names, which I then gladly use. They seem to go down pretty well. I find it interesting that names like Horatio seem to have a ban, but I can sell my greasy stranglers that way. I also hope that this won't change so quickly. ^^

Yes.

My whole staff has names from Friends, anything I can remember, from main cast to one-time appearances. (I'm a huge Friends fan and nerd). I have a system for my animals. For the best breeding pair(s) I do matching names. So for example if a gold female warthog's name is Barika I'll rename her to Miss Barika or Mrs Barika (with warthogs I usually have 2 females so one is the wife and the other a mistress  with slight variations in name) and the handsome stud becomes Mr Barry or something similar. I do this with all animals so I can keep track of the best breeding pairs. Sometimes I do rename them like you with funny fruit/vegetables names. I had Mrs Apple, old granny pangolin. I didn't have the heart to get rid of her so I just let her die naturally of old age in my zoo. RIP Mrs Apple

I also had a problem with one name and it was Parsley. I couldn't sell him on the market because the name was inappropriate. :(

My male gorilla's name is Jacob. I choose the names random. Whatever comes up in my head. By the end of the day they are all dead anyway. And in the mean time you're to busy to bond.

I've seen some funny names in the trade centre. If I name my animals it's usually with a name + number so I can track the parents more easily. Names are either loved ones or names that I make up. I don't name all animals though, that would take forever XD Just the ones that have extremely good stats, or I have breeding programs with.

I name them once they mature to adult and I look them over and include coding in the name regarding whether I want to just keep them, breed them, sell them, or release them. That way I can do batch selling and releasing from the animal tab just by glancing at the names. Saves me time.

I don't do anything fancy with the names other than the extra code....just randomly whatever names come to mind.

I got a Pangolin named "Sell" made me feel bad for her. Like she was just a number in someone's spread sheet and was cast off. I renamed her "Sellia" for a bit of flare. She gave me a lot of good babies. I'll miss Sellia forever.

Not very creative im afraid. Whenever i need to address amimal populations i go through and add a K or T for "keep" or "trade" to tje front of their names to make organizing my animal storage easier

The most I have done so far is to add an asterisk at the end of the names for my primary male and female animals for breeding. All other non-asterisked named animals are put on contraceptives.

But I really love the idea of renaming animals (or staff) both for usefulness (something about them I want to remember) and for humor!

I got a pronghorn animal from the market that was named James, for Harry Potter's Dad. I loved that! Wouldn't be surprised if they put up a Lily, too, but I didn't see her. heheh

I mostly keep the default names but add codes before the default name.
First, I put a number which is the generation of the animal. (In the case of animals that have one alpha male it's the generation of the father+1 regardless of the generation of the mother.)
Then there are letters. N=New aka bought, not bred in my zoo; Z=designated alpha male/breeding male of the group, Sometimes I put a Y if I want to sell them, so I recongnise them im the compare mates screen. A-D=if there are multiple habitats for one species, this is the letter of the habitat where this animal was born in or put in first if they were bought. But I still need to improve this a bit for species with pairs of two. Maybe I will give each animal a letter or number and then give the letters/numbers of the parents to the child to see who is a relative to who. Or if a child is born in habitat A from a mother born in B and a father first put in C, I could name the child 2A BC something.
So for example:
3ZN something, 3 something, 2 something, 1N something

With this system I can immediately see if inbreeding is about to happen and I have to replace the alpha male. If the alpha male is for example 4ZN Max, as soon as a female with a 5 in front of her name is an adult, I have to replace 4ZN Max or put the female away/on contraceptives. And if a male becomes an adult, I can immediately see who I have to sell (the one with just a number and no Z in front of the name).
Pro-Tip: You can quickly rename animals by going to the list of all animals in the zoo and renaming an animal there. Then you can press the tab key on your keyboard to rename the next animal.

Because of the lack of a Family tree, I started to attach Name-Affixes that sound similar to the Mother.
For example George and Helen are having a Baby thats called Greta. I rename it Greta'len or something like that. Helps a Tiny Little bit with planning your breeding.
