Ships Names of Ships

Thus just came to my mind: Why are many ships named after snakes?

Examples: Sidewinder, Adder, Viper, Asp, Python, Anaconda.

And some are also named after animals: Eagle, Vulture, Orca,
and upcoming: Beluga (liner), Dolphin, Panther (clipper)
and speculated: mamba

While they are all pretty cool names, I don't think that the average galactic citizen (not a star citizen ref) would recognize any of those names since most people don't live on earth and I highly doubt that these kinds of specialized animals would be brought to other planets, even when terraformed (different climates, etc...). Plus, by then, many of the listed animals will probably go extinct in the next 100 years (global warming, global wars, etc) so by 3300 even someone educated would only know them from the history books (if not forgotten altogether). Thus, I just don't think these ship names are relevant in the time ED takes place. It would rather be cool if the devs name ships after some supposed famous designer like they do for most planes nowadays and perhaps even after some hypothetical alien species discovered on another world.

What would you name an upcoming ship if you got the chance? Discuss!

its elite legacy to name them that way, and nothing is wrong with it.

though, i would love to see more of the birds of prey that are supposed to eat snakes, and if the game makes it ever to release more capital ships,
to have some dragons and wyverns in it.

Why not but in real life even people who loves there cars and gives them a women's name know that they are similar to any other car of the same model.

However if we could make them unique for example with unique modifications or player created paintjob in game (maybe with craft system) then yea it makes sense.

In the original game they chose a snake motif for the ships and just ran with it. When the second game came out they added a bunch of small fighters and gave them bird names (the Eagle, Hawk and Osprey, if I recall) and a bunch of large traders and gave them cat names (the Tiger and Panther come to mind, possibly a Lynx and a Lion in there somewhere), just because they could. So now they have added cetaceans to the mix for yachts and liners as well as ships so unloved they never got a proper name.

If I were to design and add a ship of my own, I'd probably start a line of ships named after squids, starting with the Humboldt for something medium sized and nasty if you get it riled.

Actually I see the FDS line as speciallized millitary craft with a bassic millitary name to match, it fit's them well imo.
