Naming a system

How does one get a system named, either on EDSM or on the galmap?
I explored a fascinating system (location secret until I return), with a washing machine spin cycle speedy neutron, incredible bright circle of whit light, right next to 2 stars with landable planets close by and heaps of other stuff.

I hereby suggest the name 'spin cycle one' , I found spin cycle two, which was an equable manic NS, but didn't bookmark the second one

I just wondered how naming things worked.

The Special Effect auction may allow a star naming for a donation, but that is unannounced so far.

Otherwise you are out of luck as no fixed process exists.

good to know well my first thought was 'mad world' I didn't realise naming needed an approval
EDSm seems to name systems on consensus I guess, but xbox doesn't link with edsm

Generally naming a system is a limited case. It is extremely rare that we allow the naming of a system, but when we do this is done through several approval processes with our development and design teams. Tributes are often put into the game to honour lost public figures who made a huge impact in the world especially within scientific discover and even in the world of sci-fi (see: "Leonard Nimoy Station" in LHS 3006 or the Megaship "Fisher's Rest" in Aldebaran.) Tributes for CMDRs are often made, too, but these are in the form of beacons and sometimes planetary bodies.

great annihilator?
etc
what about all the tourist missions to see different things that have names
I understand you mean the original body name doesn't change apart from rare occassions
PS thanks for the info

Maybe you could find out what star it actually is IRL, buy and name it, then fax your certificate to FDev and say "Hey, look, this system ACTUALLY has a name, so change it in the game to make it more realistic and immersive"

Doesn't work like that, most of those companies that sell you a star to name are using old US navy star charts that are not used by ED anyway. Back when the game was in development I asked about the same thing because a friend had "bought" a star for the widow of my best mate when he passed. It took some effort from another forum user who was an amateur astronomer to work out that stars position and a dev had to manually add it to the game and to the ED star catalogue.

It has no special name, just a catalogue designation and was added as a favour during some downtime before the game was live, it's also way up above the galactic plane and was unreachable before jumponium was added so i doubt it would happen now except under very special circumstances.

Also many of the stars in the game are predicted rather than observed, we can't see anything past the galactic core for instance so all the stars behind it are just guesses so even if you did find something in game it may not exist in real life.

IIRC there was a post some time ago by Frontier (2 years maybe? ) gauging opinion on selling star names to those who wanted to buy them. I can only presume thry decided against it.

Oh, I was being sarcastic actually, but that is pretty neat they did that for you! I presume you have been to the star in game?

I actually discovered they named a system after me before I ever started playing. I wonder, does anyone else have a system with their first name?

Quick question while you're here, but is there a reason there is a system called 'H'? It's the only system with a single letter as the name.

This post is going away from intended discussion, I am not suggesting a name to buy on galmap, juts wondered how the common names were ratified, such as the ones on edsm or for tourist missions, the assigned name not real name.
never mind, but it is all interesting stuff

Yeah, kept it quiet until I could make it there, there was a big gap i couldn't cross for a few years (90ly I think) needed a super lightweight 'Conda and Jumponium to make the trip, be easier now with engineering and the neutron overboost thingy but it was a bit of a trek back then.

There's a dodgy old video I made to show his widow where it was here.

If you're willing to shell out 1000 quid for a star name, I say go for it. I don't care if you name it System McSysface.
