I think its 22 for ships, names will be whatever the PSN limit is I imagine as its PSN ID.
Your Ship's name is limited to 22 character, your Ship's ID is limited to 6 characters (example: BT-84K, KD8-95), your CMDR's name will be your PSN ID.
Thanks, two more questions, if you please. Will one have tobuse their psn account or login name, and are both naming and ship id mandatory.

your commander name is your psn id and that can't change as for ship names and ship ID's i think that is optional
Sorry, I'm a bit confused. I have an psn account name as well as a different user name. If one has to use their psn account name, which can not be changed. Setting up an an additional user to use or changing ones user name, would serve no purpose, right.
When you login, your CMDR's name will be that of the PSN ID you are using. For Example, my PSN ID (PenguinActual) would show PenguinActual while I'm playing. On PC, I show up as Prospero Cade as I only use the Elite: Dangerous login. If a subsequent PSN ID logs in from your Console, I would imagine that ID is used for the CMDR's name.
So, your saying that it's the various user names not the account name. Right? Should my account name be "XYZ" but my login be "Billl", which is different than my wifes login which is "Rosa", my cmdr's name would be "Cmdr Billl" and should my wife play she'd be "Cmdr Rosa". Even though the actual account name is "XYZ". Correct?
Sorry if I'm coming accross as stupid, but my psn account has three names associated with it. The first is the actual account name which is associated with my email, credit card etc. the other two are just logins of users, in which case there can be up to four.

seriously bill you are over complicating something simple, i log in to elite dangerous on my acidburn2k20 psn, my commander will be Cmdr acidburn2k20, if i make a sub account called diva1234 then log in my commander will be Cmdr diva1234. it's that simple nothing complicated about it
Sorry, it's all the variation in terminology dependent on various platforms that confuses me. Acccount vs, user vs sub accounts vs etc. etc. etc. Your simply stating on a PS4, it's ones "User's" name, not the account name. Your experience and knowledge of and with PS4 is what I'll draw from, thanks for the example, it is exactly what I needed.

When you generate the PSN ID you link it to an email account. This is your PSN ID and it is the name that shows up when you login to the Playstation store. This is the name that your commander will have in Elite. It has nothing to do with usernames on the Playstation which are something different.
If you want to make a new commander name (I did - my old PSN ID was not what it is now) you need to go back and generate a new PSN ID account with a new email address linked to it. Then that will be your commanders name in Elite. It took me a bit if fiddling to also get my head around it and how names and things are displayed when you login to your Playstation but its just a case of poking around in the profile a bit.

So, I have to delete my present account, in which case I'll loose all my digital games. Then open an entirely new account and hope they allow my selection of a name. Ok, then what the heck is a sub account. If it's what they (Play Station) calls "User", then I already have two. The first is linked via email to my account name. The second is is via me. Thus it must have it's own email. Only the original user csn set ut up. Any additional "User" up to 3 additional can be added, providing they have a different name and email.
So, it's the terminology, not the process. You maybe using "Spade", where as I'm using "Shovel".
If I am understanding Miss Acid correctly, a sub account is a second, third and or forth "USER" established by the first and orginal user on the same device.

Nope. Just add a new account - I did that. You can login with either on the same machine.

Don't know never used it - but regardless do they have different PSN ID's? Can you login to the playstation store with either of those users? If not, then its not relevant.

Yesssir. I just did a double check. When you create a new user on the Console it asks you whether you wish to attach it to an existing or a new PSN account. If you want a NEW COMMANDER name, you will need to create a NEW PSN account and tie it to a new email address. The 'user' on the console is just the console users ID not the PSN account ID.
e.g. PSN ID Lngjhnsilver1 : user Lngjhnsilver1, user, Ted, user Dave all tied to the one account, or
PSN ID Lngjhnsilver1: user Lngjhnsilver1, PSN ID Ted_01, User, TED_01.
