That article doesn't actually say that at all. It says the way the rover analyses rocks could be destroying evidence of life. Which is a distinct difference.

All the planets are made of the same stuff so its possible, I think I read somewhere that mars once had a core like earth does, that generated the magnetic shield which keeps out the harmful rays and allows life to happen, I'm no expert though.
