natural habitat

I don’t think there really is such a thing as habitats like with zoo tycoon 2. You just get different ground textures and mix them until your animals are happy. And also the place of your zoo will be a part of it. Like we saw the E3 videos where they had a park based on a crater in Africa I believe so natural the basic state of the ground is african sand, plants,... but you can probably change some exhibits to be more greener and fitting to non african animals.

We also saw Zebras on kind of a green pasture in an european zoo I think. So I guess the animals will be a bid more tolerant with their enclosure this time around. They were rather picky in ZT1. Didn't play 2 too much, so I can't speak about that.

Makes me wonder, how can an animal, that never seen his natural surroundings, be picky about their zoo environments.

Temperature makes sense to me, and not all plants can grow in cold or hot environments, but the animal wouldn't care if there would be a cactus or a oak.

It's more for theming and the people to make environments be like where the animal comes from.

I agree. But that's how Zoo Tycoon 1 was made. You even neede specific plants for their enviroments and some animals that origially lived in the rain forest didn't like any plant growing there nevertheless. It was a bit ridicolous but at the time being not much questions were asked. We were all younger. I was afraid Planet Zoo would head in a similar direction when I saw the crocodile not being happy with the amount of soil in it's enviorement, but I guess it will be different this time.

Anyway it is more entertaining to try to make a habitat similar to the real one, beyond if the animal is aware of it or not. It would be boring to see all the facilities the same, just because animals don't know that. That is just my opinion.

It's really all about story telling in a zoo. If you tell the story of a world journey it's absolutely neccessary to make the exhibits as natural and close to their original habitat as possible. If you tell the story of the little city zoo that doesn't have too much money for scenery, a european oak in the lion exhibit is better. If you tell the story of an abondon zoo in a post-apocalyptic scenery, you need a lot of plants as everything is overgrown. If you tell the story of the well planned out zoo from a crazy milionaire, all plants have to look perfect. :)
