Nausea and Headaches in space games...!!

Hi CMDRs;

I have been playing Elite Dangerous for almost a Year now and have been watching the occasional YouTube video as well and I have yet to experience
any Nausea from these activities.
However as soon as I see footage from other games like Star Citizen, even the tutorials or any cockpit walk around footage give me powerful Nausea within minutes.
What is causing this ? Is it the jittery camera which is commonly used to give the feel of ambience ?
Is it the game engine ? The Frame rate ?
I am SOOOO lucky ED does not cause me to get seasick like these other games.

Has anyone else had these problems ? Either in ED or in other games ??

To be honest I don't usually have these problems but the original Portal really hit me hard. I think it was level 18 which caused the problems. As far as I recall I knew what to do it was just that the platform on which the button was located was so small I couldn't stay on it to get the timing right. Anyway repeated attempts which involved jumping in one portal and exiting the other sideways seemed to be the cause. Now there may have been other factors involved in me feeling so unwell but having the same result on two separate attempts at playing through the game suggests it was to do with my reaction to the game. Needless to say that having a game cause me to have to lie down in a darkened room for a couple of hours to recover meant I never completed that game.

I have seen discussions on steam that suggest that too narrow a field of view can be the cause of some of these problems as it exaggerates camera movements. Valve recommends that if people have problems with motion sickness when playing Half Life 2 they should adjust the settings to 90 degree field of view

I always thought I have pretty strong vestibular system, at least no game or movie made me sick ever...before SC. I need to have a break after playing it for as little as half an hour. It just makes me feel lightheaded and sick.

I used to have no problems with motion sickness in video games until around when Halo 2 came out. After that I started to get horribly ill after only a few minutes when playing any fps-type game. Basically the entire fps genre is off limits to me now.
I haven't had any problems with elite, but what you're saying about SC worries me a bit. I'm also wondering if NMS is going to be a no go too because of its fps aspect.

I suspect the motion sickness may be caused by the rapidly moving screen elements while your head is motionless. I use the TrackIR device and now I move my head left, right, up to see where I want to see. This keeps my head in relative agreement with the on-screen motion - the elements around the target ship in front of me may move but my eyes are locked onto a relatively stationary target ship as I look left, right, up. I imagine a similar issue was causing VR sickness - the lag between your actions and screen changes. I'm sure there are probably internet articles on this stuff.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Some games hit me like that, too. ED never has, thankfully. SC - yeah, the head bob may be part of that. I've also noticed that, playing anything but Arena Commander (where I get good frame rate) can start to make me feel a bit 'off'. Could be the low frame rate in SC for Port Ollisar or the planet.

In the PAST .... which is quite a while for a few but not others here ....
I used to have huge problems with the QUAKE engine .... so I could not play Quake 2 games .... but never had issues with the Unreal Engine ...so I could play Unreal ... and Unreal Tournament.
Halflife itself never had issues ... but half-life 2 I was able to play myself ... but not watch others play.
Interestingly enough I can watch OTHERS play ED no problem at all ....

Now that you mention it I do recall having some nausea playing the quake games while I was definitely able to play UT for hours. I had forgotten that. I wonder what it was about quake?

I only seem to get it in the SRV myself. Motion in SRVs is a bit harsh for me, but in flight never.

Same here. On bumpy planets/moons I got to call inn my ship after about 10-15 minutes in the SRV. Got a super-widescreen with FOV set to about half.
I know 3rd person camera is out of the question but on the SRV that would be realy good for my head and stomach.

I have found that some graphics engines can make me feel nauseous within 10 minutes. Any that use the "Quake" engine are unplayable. The Xbox version of "Duke Nukem" also gave me problems. Since I have started playing in VR I have had issues with driving the SRV, but I will persevere, as I have been told that you can get 'resistant' to the effects with carefully increased exposure.

In fact if you hammer your foot all day everyday .... the pain will eventually cease. -_-

for me, playing on a higher Hz gives me less headaches.

and i notice a big differance between 60 and 144hz.

Do you drive with assist on? I have found that the motion is smoother and it is in fact easier to drive, if you have drive assist off.

Actually found it a lot harder to control with with DA On, so have had it off for a while. Less noticable now I can drive the SRV proper mind you but still notice it after shortish periods.

I think its mainly the bumpiness of the ride on anything more than mild hills and moderate speeds. I haven't tried that newer feature they added yet (cant remember what it was called) but it was meant to help keep your view level to the terrain I think. Might help?

Would love to be able to get a suspension upgrade for the SRV or maybe get a hovercraft or something .. that could be cool. :)

Agreed, my experience, particularly with the dog-fighting videos - I really can't watch it for any length of time. Never had this before, I just wonder if it's because I'm watching rather than actually playing. However other comments suggest it's play-associated too. Hmmm.
