Newcomer / Intro Nav beacons and your combat rating

Are nav beacons a good place to go to improve your combat rating ? Apparently I have claimed 62 bounties and I'm still at harmless. I know I'm mostly helping others so its not 1 on 1.

The other 2 ratings are mostly but I haven't dont a lot of exploring or trading.

Am I just being impatient ?
Cheers,
John

To OP
I would suggest trying out a RES site or conflict zone if you want to improve your combat rank faster... More targets to shoot means faster ranking upwards...

I cannot tell you how many kills you need to do to get the next rank because I don't know it(and don't care) but FYI I currently have a total of ca. 5500 and have a rank or "Dangerous" I think....

Anyway good luck with the mission to higher combat ranking cmdr and fly safe out there.... :)

Someone will tell me if I am correct or not :) but the rating of the pilot you take down also makes a difference in how quickly you progress, e.g: if you concentrate on harmless pilots you will progress slower than if you concentrate on competent pilots.

As I understand it, there's far more money to be made faster at Resource Extraction Sites, but usually at a higher risk. If you've got that many kills, I suspect you're ready to step things up. I did when I was still in a Sidewinder and got away with it.

I quite like Nav beacons as they are a bit quieter, you have time to pick your targets and space is not too crowded. They are good practice for combat skills.

You can certainly earn a lot more at Resource Extraction Sites, but the combat tends to be a bit more hectic and there is the added risk of hitting an asteroid.

Combat zones are the most hectic of all. Your targets are marked automatically once you have chosen a faction, but the amounts are fixed for each type of ship so you can't make as much money from a small number of kills.

yup goto a RES site, dodge big rocks, kill kill kill, make more money, the Nav's are safer but wheres the fun in that :p.To find a RES, look at the system map and fly to a ringed plant, check nav panel as u get closer, take your time on approch as ur super cruise may panic as u get close with impact alerts :p

Oh, and typically a ring will have multiple RESes. I'd recommend picking one that's not in shade; they tend to both be very quiet and hard to dodge rocks in.

They are okay but if it's purely to up your combat rating go to a war zone. You will find most of the pilots are Dangerous and upwards and that helps you rank up more quickly. You won't make a bundle of cash though, if you want to make money then head for a RES site.

Nav Beacons are fine, I have only ever done combat in them and I am now Competent and for the first few weeks of playing the game I only explored and traded. Sometimes Nav Beacons are very quiet and other times they can be busy, the trick is patience. I was in one for 30 mins yesterday and only 3 "Wanted" ships had appeared with a total of 13k of bounties. Within the next 30 mins I had amassed 500k, I had nearly decided to quit but then almost every ship which spawned was a Wanted one. An Anaconda helped , he had a 200k bounty

Just to show how busy they can be this is the one I visited . I came away with 684,000 credits from here took about 45 mins. There were times when it got even busier than this

I've never found anybody that is "Wanted" in a Conflict Zone. Does that matter and will I be wanted if I go there shooting?

I've never been to one but I understand that you need to choose a faction once you come out of supercruise, once you choose then some will turn green and some will turn red

If you choose a side no. To choose a side hit 4(or your assigned button for your right control panel) and switch right until you get to the panel with all the stuff like Flight assist, Orbit lines and so on. The first thing there is the side you can choose. Once you chose a side, you dont get any bounty for killing enemies.

Great! Didn't know. Thank you!

I believe combat rating is based on the number of kills, combined with the rating of the pilot you kill. To increase this quickly you need to go somewhere that generally has higher rated pilots. Such as a Combat Zone or a Strong Signal Source (I do not recommend strong signal sources if you are solo or in a combat ship smaller than an A-rated Vulture). RES sites can also be a good place to go, but any wanted pilot above Master ranking is a very rare find in a RES. Highest I have ever seen in a RES is a Dangerous Anaconda, and only one at that.

Overall I wouldn't be too fussed over your combat ranking. It offers no benefit until you reach Elite ranking, and that is gonna take time anyways.
